As he reveals there are no plans for a Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit sequel, Chris Pine talks about his regrets to do with the film.
It was just under a year ago that the reboot of the Jack Ryan movie series finally landed in cinemas (having being put back from Christmas 2013). Going by the title Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, the new movie saw Chris Pine cast in the lead role, with Kenneth Branagh stepping behind the camera to direct (as well as playing the film's villain).
The idea was that Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit would reboot the series again, but a $135m worldwide box office take was some way below what Paramount Pictures would have been hoping (and the lowest haul for any Jack Ryan movie to date). And whilst the negative only cost a relatively meagre $60m to make, any hope of a further sequel seems dead, at least for the time being.
"That's one of my deep regrets," Chris Pine has now admitted to Moviefone, "that we didn't totally get that right."
"It's a great franchise and if it's not me then I hope if gets a fifth life at this point," he added. "It's just great. I love the spy genre. I hope it's done again and with a great story."
He admits that there have been no talks about a further Jack Ryan adventure, too. Given that Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit was also the weakest Ryan movie to date, that's not much of a surprise, however. A shame, though.
