Spider-Man 3 has no shortage of critics. And one of them is its director, Sam Raimi...
We'll say it up front: we've got a soft spot for Spider-Man 3. It's a film that has clear problems, but there are moments in it that really work a treat. Furthermore, we'd far rather have something that takes some risks and falls short than a tame reboot.
Director Sam Raimi departed the Spider-Man movies after the third film (with Sony pulling the plug on his planned Spider-Man 4), and he's been chatting to The Nerdist Podcastabout his time with Spider-Man 3. And in spite of the host saying that he didn't think Spider-Man 3 was "bad," Raimi replied with the word "awful" instead. Tongue a little in cheek perhaps, but it's clear it's not a movie that Raimi is fond of.
So: what went wrong?
"It’s a movie that just didn’t work very well," Raimi said. "I tried to make it work, but I didn’t really believe in all the characters, so that couldn’t be hidden from people who loved Spider-Man. If the director doesn’t love something, it’s wrong of them to make it when so many other people love it".
He further admitted that ramping things up and raising the stakes following the huge success of Spider-Man 2didn't help. "I should’ve just stuck with the characters and the relationships and progressed them to the next step and not tried to top the bar," he conceded.
