Avatar 2 and Future Sequels Delayed, James Cameron Comments

You're going to have to wait a little longer waiting for the next three Avatarmovies. This is, of course, assuming you were waiting for them in the first place. There's been a lot of chatter lately about how one of the biggest movies of all time didn't seem to have any lasting impact. Nor has there particularly been much clamor for a sequel from the general public, let alone the three sequels that James Cameron says he's cooking up.

So, with Avatar 2 originally roughly scheduled for 2016, now Mr. Cameron has realized that date might have been a little ambitious, especially considering how many other things are now involved. "There's a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don't get when you're making a stand-alone film," he said.

There has been progress, though:

"We're writing three simultaneously. And we've done that so that everything tracks throughout the three films. We're not just going to do one and then make up another one and another one after that...and parallel with that, we're doing all the design. So we've designed all the creatures and the environments."

So we can now, at the earliest, expect Avatar 2 in 2017, with the next three to follow roughly one year apart.
