Tom Hardy was set to play the leader of the Suicide Squad in the upcoming DC superhero movie. That may no longer be the case.
NewsDavid Ayer's Suicide Squad movie is going to need a new team leader. Tom Hardy has left the project for reasons unknown. Hardy was set to play Colonel Rick Flagg, the leader of the film's team of bad guys and anti-heroes. Given the accelerated timetable on Suicide Squad, this is probably a scheduling issue.
Apparently there is an offer out to Jake Gyllenhaal to replace Hardy in the film. The Hollywood Reporter figures that scheduling may also be a factor for Gyllenhaal, who has Broadway commitments until mid-March, while Suicide Squad needs to go before the cameras in April.
Suicide Squad, which opens on August 5th, 2016, still stars Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jared Leto as the Joker, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, and Cara Delevingne as the Enchantress. Viola Davis is all but locked up for the role of Amanda Waller. Even without Tom Hardy, that's quite a cast.
