Paul Feig explains why the Ghostbusters movie will be shooting in New York City, and why it cannot be simply referential to the original.
NewsIt is perhaps not the biggest news in the world, but it’s still nice having confirmation that Ghostbusters 3 or the Ghostbusters reboot, or whatever it’s called this week will bet in New York City. In fact, the new director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) confirms that he couldn’t imagine it being set anywhere else.
While chatting with Empire, Feig explained why only the Big Apple was big enough to store all this supernatural energy.
“To me, it’s such a New York movie, and the biggest sin would be to pull it out of there,” Feig said. “I just love New York and, selfishly, I just want to shoot in New York.”
Feig did stress, however, that this does not mean the reboot will simply be imitating or recreating aspects of the 1984 comedy classic.
Feig said, “We’re not recreating the old movie, but we want to do just enough fun nods that the fans will go, ‘Oh, okay, they’re acknowledging that the other movie existed.’ I like to watch parodies, but I don’t want to do them, because they’re too referential. Comedy that’s too referential has such a short shelf life whereas comedy that’s based around characters will be relatable 2000 years from now, because people won’t change that much.”
Indeed, they do not. So, it will be interesting if he can change their minds about the new need for a Ghostbusters reboot in the next few years…
