Inherent Vice filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson defends superhero cinema in a recent interview, saying the genre has a "bad rap."
NewsPaul Thomas Anderson, the director of such films as There Will Be Blood, The Master, and this fall’s hotly debated (but Oscar nominated!) Inherent Vice, has a message about Hollywood’s obsession with superhero movies…and it isn’t what you’d expect.
The filmmaker who has made no bones in the past about thinking The Dark Knight Rises is an impressive work of art has also now come to the defense of studios’ most lucrative and omnipresent genre—as well as the current state of film. While speaking with Rolling Stone, Anderson responded to the notion that American cinema is now only about capes and cowls.
“Ah, that’s such a crock of shit,” Anderson said. “I can’t remember a year in recent memory where there were less complaints about the quality of movies. And what’s wrong with superhero movies, you know? I don’t know. You’re talking to someone that enjoys watching those films. People need to get a life if they’re having that discussion. Those movies get a bad rap.”
Obviously being Den of Geek, we tend to agree in many respects with the sentiment. In addition to The Dark Knight films that Anderson has praised, we have a fondness for just this year’s Guardians of the Galaxy and X-Men: Days of Future Past, which landed near the top of our “Top 11 Geeky Movies of 2014” list.
Nevertheless, there is something to be said about getting ambitious smaller films made in the current climate when you’re not already on the level of stature as Paul Thomas Anderson. But it’s an interesting viewpoint from a filmmaker who has plenty of other curious things to say if you follow this link.
