Josh Trank finally speaks out with some details about the Fantastic Four movie, and your first look at Michael B. Jordan as the Human Torch.
NewsWe're just hours away from the first teaser for Josh Trank's Fantastic Four movie. That's right, the trailer will appear online on January 27th. In advance of that. Josh Trank finally broke his silence, and even revealed the first photo of Michael B. Jordan as the Human Torch, albeit in Johnny Storm form.
Read on for a massive update on the Fantastic Four reboot.
As far as that delay goes, Mr. Trank says that they “consciously decided to not release anything official.” Not that we expect that to put any of the rumors to rest, but there you go.
Now, while this certainly won't appease fans hoping for a live action version of The Incredibles or something remarkably similar to the spirit of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Trank revealed that David Cronenberg as one of the biggest influences on the film:
I’m a huge David Cronenberg fan, and I always viewed Fantastic Four and the kind of weirdness that happens to these characters and how they’re transformed to really fall in line more with a Cronenberg-ian science fiction tale of something horrible happening to your body and [it] transforming out of control. And the potential for a hard sci-fi take on that material makes me really excited.
He went on to say that "the biggest influence for me in terms of an overall view and communicating tool to the various department was Scannersor The Fly."
Wow. I have to say, this whole project suddenly sounds a lot more interesting. He justified this seemingly radical departure from the tone of the source material by saying, "Fantastic means the tone needs to be fantastical, and we’re talking about fantastical things, but it doesn’t mean “pop.”
Check out the first official set photo, featuring Michael B. Jordan as the Human Torch. I don't think that's a mo-cap suit, it looks like a spacesuit or a containment suit. That would certainly go along with what Trank has said about the Four's powers being out of control and potentially horrific.
And how's this for a score...Philip Glass is composing music for the movie along with Marco Beltrami.
There's a huge interview with Josh Trank and Simon Kinberg over at Collider. It's well worth your time to read.
