Milla Jovovich is set to star in an adaptation of George R.R. Martin short stories, albeit those not related to Game of Thrones.
NewsIf you’re like any of the other millions of readers that have enjoyed George R.R. Martin’s epic “A Song of Ice and Fire” book series (the basis for HBO’s Game of Thrones), then last week’s revelation that we will not be getting The Winds of Winter in this calendar year (yet again) was just another disappointment in the everlasting waiting game that is being a Martin fan.
However, Martin has many other projects that are moving ahead as scheduled, including a film adaptation of a group of fantasy short stories that are not Westeros-related: In the Lost Lands. And now said movie has a genre name attached to star in one of its multiple story threads with Resident Evil’s Milla Jovovich.
Jovovich will play a mercenary sorceress who is hired to find the secret of lycanthropy (werewolf shapeshifting), but gets more than she bargained for. It is just one of three Martin tales that will be interconnected in a feature film that conceivably could have the “Sin City” effect.
Also set to star Justin Chatwin (Jimmy on the first three seasons of Shameless), In the Lost Lands is being developed by German and Canadian investors with Myriad handling sales of the film. The project has been written and is to be directed by Constantin Werner.
Below, Myriad has released a synopsis for the three intersecting stories via The Hollywood Reporter, and quite honestly it sounds like “classic” Martin. And by this I mean that it may appear to be more high fantasy than most Westerosi storylines in Game of Thrones, but it has the same touch of cynicism and the intermingling of sex, violence, and nihilism that defines so much of his prose.
In one thread, the desperate queen of a city built into a towering mountain hires the sorceress Gray Alys (Jovovich) to travel into the ghostly wasteland called the Lost Lands to obtain the gift of shape-shifting into a werewolf, but she doesn’t realize that the fulfillment of her wish will come at a terrible price.
Meanwhile, warrior girl Sharra must fight a dragon that serves as the gatekeeper of seven worlds to reunite with her lost lover Kaydar. During this quest, she meets the mysterious lord of a deserted castle, Laren Dorr, who seduces her so completely that she forgets her quest and stays with him, unaware that he is the real gatekeeper.
And in the futuristic tale “Bitterblooms,” a young barbarian girl gets spellbound by a lonely witch in a spacecraft, who shows her beauty and love, which turns out to be a net of lies and deceit.
