The hunt for a female lead for Gareth Edwards' first Star Wars spinoff movie has Felicity Jones up front. Plus...what about Tatiana Maslany?
NewsThe plot thickens with the hunt for a lead in Gareth Edwards'Star Wars spinoff movie. The last week has seen a quartet of talented actresses including Tatiana Maslany, Rooney Mara, Kate Mara, and Felicity Jones read for a major part in that mysterious film. Now it looks like there's a frontrunner.
Felicity Jones, who was nominated for an Oscar this year for her work in The Theory of Everything, now appears to be the frontrunner, as she's now "in talks" for the part. If Jones gets the part, this will probably prevent her from appearing in the next installment of Sony's troubled Spider-Man franchise. Jones appeared as Felicia Hardy in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and the plan has been for her to return as the Black Cat in either a future Spidey sequel or as part of the Sinister Six villain team-up film. The Sinister Sixis still on the schedule for November 11th, 2016, while this Star Wars movie is set for December 16th, 2016.
Last week, Tatiana Maslany had to quit an off-Broadway production of Neil LaBute's The Way We Get By because of film commitments, leading many to speculate that she had landed the Star Wars part. It now looks like that was to star in indie drama Two Lovers and a Bearwith Dane DeHaan. Between her casting in that film and the Felicity Jones talks, her involvement in the new Star Warsmovie is looking less and less likely. As a consolation prize, consider that The Wrap seems to corroborate early reports that Aaron Paul and Edgar Ramirez are in the running for the male lead in this flick.
What we do know is that Gareth Edwards is directing from a script by Chris Weitz and Gary Whitta. I wrote more about the future of the Star Wars movie franchise right here.
