Ready for some elderly Sherlock Holmes action? Here’s our first proper look at Ian McKellen’s Holmes in action…
NewsIt all went a bit quiet after we first heard that Ian McKellen would be playing Sherlock Holmes for a big screen adventure dubbed Mr Holmes. Now though, that silence has been broken by our first official look at the Magneto and Gandalf actor’s take on the character in action.
We had previously seen a head-shot of McKellen in a nice hat, of course, but this is our first still from the film proper.
Without further chatter, here’s the picture…
No deerstalker, then.
Regardless of headwear choices, the elderly years of the world’s greatest detective does sound like an interesting filmic prospect.
Here's a clip from the film:
Mr Holmes is based on Mitch Cullin’s novel A Slight Trick Of The Mind, which imagined Sherlock’s twilight years as a 93-year-old retiree in the year 1947.
“Sherlock Holmes at 93 is retired, still solving mysteries: but here’s the sting – he also keeps bees,” a pun-happy McKellen commented last year.
“So many splendid actors have already played the part but none of them had Bill Condon [Dreamgirls, Gods And Monsters, The Fifth Estate, Twilight: Breaking Dawn] directing. I’m the lucky one: and I’m excited,” he added.
The story of the film sees Sherlock return from Japan where, actually looking for a restorative plant, he witnessed nuclear devastation. He returns to his seaside retirement where he attempts to solve one final case with the assistance of his housekeeper’s son Roger, despite his dimishing mind.
Count us in intrigued on this one. More news as we hear it.
