Stuck in development hell, the live action Robotech adaption gets a new creative team.
NewsThe Robotechmovie has long been in gestation. Various teams have been attached to this '80s anime property, including Lawrence Kasdan of Star Wars fame. However, none have been able to crack the story or the challenges inherent in making an adaption of this 85 episode series. Warner Brothers is bringing a new team into the fray, that of 300and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra scribe Michael Gordon and 300producers Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton.
It’s no wonder so many people have been attached to Robotechover the years. Even if you just adapt the first arc of the series, that of the Macross saga, it’s still a lot to nail down into one film. Robotechworks because it’s a story told over a long stretch of time, showing the effect of war on its main characters through action and romance. To compress that down into one film is one hell of a juggling act.
Is this new team capable of taking on Robotech? When you look at the names they don’t exactly inspire confidence from long time Robotechfans. If anything, it looks like Warner Bros. vaguely knows Robotechis about a war and picked some people who worked on a movie that was kind of about a war. Makes sense, right?
Ever since the series finished in the '80s it’s had trouble staying afloat. Whether it be the aborted sequel series, the good intentioned but ultimately flawed Shadow Chronicles, the abomination that was Love Live Alive, or the cancelled Robotech Academy. This franchise can not catch a break. It says something when Harmony Gold, famously slow with releasing new Robotechcontent, can put out a film faster than Warner Bros. can get one together.
If done right, the Robotechfilm can finally bring the franchise back into pop culture relevance. Can this new team do it? Only time will tell.
