J.J. Abrams has a few things to say about the new lightsaber in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and more!

News

J.J. Abrams, director of the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens, talked to Collider about the most highly anticipated sequel of 2015.

As you'd expect, Abrams has to answer a few questions about the film every once in a while, and the man is good at teasing without revealing anything. Still, he gives us a few interesting little tidbits here and there while on the carpet of Visual Effects Society Awards.

Here is the interview:

First of all, a little status update on where post-production is on The Force Awakens. When asked how he felt about the first rough cut of the film, Abrams simply said, "We're still cutting now." Which is okay since production still has some time. Or maybe he's playing coy. Have you met the former Star Trek director?

On the lightsaber, Abrams said with a smile:

I will say that what’s been funny is, since the lightsaber’s come out, I cannot tell you how many contradictory emails I have received from people who have both defended it with unbelievably detailed graphics…I’ve gotten things that are nuts, and I’ve gotten people who’ve shown how it’ll kill you and how it doesn’t make any sense.  It’s been the funniest thing to see the arguments that have developed over this thing.

In case you don't know, the new lightsaber in The Force Awakens teaser has caused quite the stir in the Star Wars community. It's a bit of a weird design to say the least.

Abrams also confirmed that he wouldn't be directing the sequels, "I wouldn’t say 8 and 9 are my baby, Rian will be working at least on 8, but I’m executive producing those films, yeah." So Abrams will be keeping an eye on things after he's out of the director's chair.

He's also excited about Simon Pegg writing the next Star Trek sequel (which Abrams hints is NOT called "Star Trek 3"), "[Pegg] and I had talked quite a bit about story, he had a lot of wonderful ideas. It just sort of felt obvious that he would be a wonderful person to work on the story and help craft the story, so he’s working on it." Abrams is executive producing that film as well.

Finally, Abrams said he's looking forward to Comic-Con, but didn't confirm he'd be there with Star Wars. Bets are he will be, though.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens zooms into theaters on Dec. 18. For so much more Star Wars, check out our coverage hub.
