It's very early days, but Studio Canal is in discussions about making a Paddington sequel...
NewsIn America, the biggest surprise hit of recent months has been Clint Eastwood's American Sniper. In the UK? It's arguably been Paddington, a really quite lovely family movie from director Paul King, that far outperformed box office expectations. The movie has picked up over $200m and counting worldwide so far, and that total continues to grow.
It's a thoroughly deserved triumph.
Such has been its level of success that distributor Studio Canal has begun talks over a sequel. It's early stages for the project thus far, with the studio in talks with producer David Heyman about a Paddington 2.
Said Studio Canal's CEO Olivier Courson, "Paddington has been our biggest bet. Even the development costs, such as creating the bear, were significant. But it shows we can be ambitious in this area of family entertainment, even if it brings us into more direct competition with US studios".
One name missing from the Paddington 2 story thus far is that of Paul King, who wrote and directed the first film. From that, you can probably take it that it's very, very early stages for a possible Paddington 2, and surely getting King attached to the movie is a high priority.
In the meantime, though, the DVD and Blu-ray arrives in UK stores next month...
