Pee-wee's next big adventure (with a little help from Judd Apatow) won't be on the silver screen, it will be on Netflix.
NewsThe secret word is "streaming." Judd Apatow will produce a brand new Pee-wee Herman movie for Netflix. John Lee (Broad City, Inside Amy Schumer) will direct. The movie is called Pee-wee's Big Holiday and it stars, unsurprisingly, Paul Reubens in his most famous role. Reubens co-wrote the film with Paul Rist (Comedy Bang! Bang!, Arrested Development). No word on a premiere date just yet.
Here's the official synopsis:
In Pee-wee’s Big Holiday, a fateful meeting with a mysterious stranger inspires Pee-wee Herman to take his first-ever holiday in this epic story of friendship and destiny.
“We didn’t hesitate for a moment knowing that Pee-wee’s Big Holiday was such a passion project for Paul and Judd and we are delighted by the opportunity to introduce such a beloved character to a new generation,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos in a statement. “We are thrilled to bring our viewers around the world the wonder of Pee-wee Herman.”
“As a fan of Pee-wee Herman since he first appeared on The Dating Game, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the brilliant Paul Reubens on this film. It is a dream come true,” said Judd Apatow.
“Judd and I dreamt up this movie four years ago. The world was much different back then— Netflix was waiting by the mailbox for red envelopes to arrive. I’ve changed all that. The future is here. Get used to it. Bowtie is the new black,” said Pee-wee Herman.
Netflix is currently the streaming home of virtually all of Paul Reubens' Pee-wee Herman library. Both feature films, Pee-wee's Big Adventure (Tim Burton's major directorial debut) and Big Top Pee-wee are there. So is the wonderful document of Pee Wee's live show, The Pee-wee Herman Show, which originally aired on HBO and is aimed squarely at adults. And then there's the excellent (and far more subversive than it had any right to be) Pee-wee's Playhouse Saturday morning TV series.
His new film will be right at home, then.
