Robert Heinlein's science fiction novel, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is finally getting the big screen treatment, as "Uprising."
NewsOne of Robert Heinlein's most memorable novels, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is getting the big screen treatment, with a big name director, and a shorter title. The Moon is a Harsh Mistresswill become Uprisingfor the movie, with Bryan Singer behind the camera.
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress was published in 1966, and it's the story of a lunar colony that decides to secede from Earth, by nearly any means necessary. The main character is Manuel "Mannie" Garcia O'Kelly-Davis, and the book is told from his perspective.
I'm surprised that there haven't been more Heinlein adaptations in recent years. The most well known is probably Paul Verhoeven's criminally underrated StarshipTroopers, a film that took considerable liberties with the book itself, but definitely had a sly understanding of Heinlein's politics. The Moon is a Harsh Mistress has a distinctly libertarian bent to its story, too.
Perhaps as studios look for alternatives to superheroes we'll see a return to classic science fiction in some quarters. Syfy is about to unveil their mini-series based on Arthur C. Clarke's Childhood's End. Perhaps someone will take a chance on Heinlein creations like Lazarus Long or Valentine Smith for long form series exploration. And if HBO is looking for a Game of Thrones replacement in a few years, they should give the Frank Herbert estate a ring about Dune...
No word on when to expect Uprising, but we'll be on the lookout. And I'd just like to throw Arnold Schwarzenegger's name out there for Manny, because that would be awesome.
