Months after the Kickstarter reached its requisite number, we are given our first glimpse of the documentary about Superman Lives: the most infamous failed movie launch in history.
After Warner Brothers in the 1990s invested millions of dollars into the picture—including on multiple screenplays with several drafts by Kevin Smith, director Tim Burton’s vision and star Nicolas Cage’s marquee name—they ended up with the only Superman movie that would ever feature its lead character all in black, not flying and fighting giant spiders (as well as a gay robot?)…It was unceremoniously scrapped, and the myth of this failure has grown into legend.
Enter: The Death of “Superman Lives”: What Happened? This feature length documentary by Jon Schnepp, which is aiming for a 2014 summer release, will chronicle everything extensively known about the infamous turkey, and even attempt to animate several key sequences. In our first glimpse at the fan-funded project, Schnepp mainly appears to be showcasing his interview with star Nicolas Cage about the Superman that never was.
Expect more to unspool about this Hollywood horror story between now and next summer.
