Jeremy Renner will be reprising his Hawkeye role in Captain America: Civil War, raising the question of which side he'll take.

News

At this point, one might wonder if we should just begin calling the third Captain America movie “Avengers 3.” It certainly appears that way with the increasing list of capes and cowls joining the superhero proceedings.

Indeed, it is now confirmed that Jeremy Renner will reprise his bow and arrow for Captain America: Civil War when Hawkeye joins the fray.

The news actually comes from another film that should have genre fans very intrigued: the announcement of his casting in Story of Your Life, a new science fiction film from Prisoners director Denis Villeneuve. That film, which adapts a short story of the same name by Ted Chiang, stars Amy Adams as a linguistics expert who is tasked with making first contact with an advanced alien race.

While reporting that Renner will reteam with his American Hustle co-star in Adams, The Hollywood Reporter incidentally revealed that in addition to joining Story of Your Life, Renner will also be playing Hawkeye in Captain America: Civil War, which begins shooting this spring.

For those keeping count, that puts the superhero roster in the third Cap film to Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), the Falcon (Anthony Mackie), the Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Crossbones (Frank Grillo), and of course, the still uncast Marvel Studios reboot version of Spider-Man.

This is quite the superhero round up that’s going on. Personally, I’d still love to also see Captain Marvel join the fight, but my guess is the roster is pretty much set at this point.

For the record, Hawkeye did not appear in Mark Millar and Steve Niven’s comic book Civil War saga in 2007. However, he has been depicted in the past as suspicious of Iron Man’s intentions in the comics. But I have a sneaking hunch that he may side with the good Tony Stark for the film version of Civil War. The reason for this is simple: what better conflict could there be than Black Widow and Hawkeye taking different sides of the caped ideological question? And Widow made her position about the role of superheroes pretty clear at the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

Joe and Anthony Russo are directing Captain America: Civil War with a May 6, 2016 release date already marked. You can check out the other Marvel Superhero Movie Release dates here.
