Tim Burton: always interesting, but no longer great?

Tim Burton is reteaming with Disney, his Alice in Wonderland studio, to bring live-action to another animated classic: Dumbo.

News

As the generally positive response for Disney’s Cinderella continues to trickle in this week, the House of Mouse has already moved its eye to another live-action remake of a beloved animated classic: Dumbo. And now, that aerial elephant has its director.

Tim Burton has come off his latest film, the relatively restrained biopic Big Eyes, with an apparent appetite to return to larger than life spectacle: such as a sky-walking baby circus elephant.

Burton has worked with The Walt Disney Company in the past, helming their first major success at live-action reinvention of their animated library in 2010’s $1 billion grossing Alice in Wonderland. In many ways, that film’s box office spawned Mirror, Mirror, Maleficent, and now Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella, which stars Lily James and Richard Madden.

Dumbo will follow the plot of the 1941 classic where a talking elephant’s dreams of flying really comes true after a series of misadventures. The film is being penned by Ehren Kruger of Transformers: Age of Extinction and The Ring remake. Kruger is producing alongside Justin Springer of Tron: Legacy and Oblivion.

Burton’s history with Disney actually goes all the way back to before his directorial career when he was an animator at Walt Disney Animation Studios right out of school from CalArts.
