The new Naked Gun movie won't be the kind of spoof the rest of the others are. Er...
NewsNothing, in truth, that we read about the planned reboot of The Naked Gun movies has cheered us up thus far. The plan is for Ed Helms to take on the role of some descendant of Lt Frank Drebin, who of course was played by Leslie Nielsen across three movies, and the TV show Police Squad!
The new version? "It won't be like the Naked Gun that I did," David Zucker has revealed. Zucker directed the first two movies and produced the third. "It may be good, but it won't be that kind of movie", he said, adding that the producers this time will be veering away from "that style of spoof."
Which kind of begs the question: what's the point?
"They're going to use the title" and "they're nice people," Zucker continued. But the new Naked Gun will be very different to the last three, it seems.
In fact, Zucker's not keen on the casting either, disagreeing with the choice of Ed Helms to lead the movie. "I would want somebody who had never been in a comedy," he argued, noting that Ed Helms is known for "three of the biggest comedies ever."
In the chat with Yahoo, incidentally, Zucker also revealed that he left the Scary Movie films because "by Scary Movie 5, it just got watered down, we had to do what the studio required." So he upped sticks and didn't direct.
The new Naked Gun is still an active project. Reluctantly, we'll bring you more on it as we hear it.
