With American Sniper arriving on DVD and Blu-ray in June, Clint Eastwood argues that his hit film is "anti-war."
NewsOut of nowhere, Clint Eastwood's adaptation of Chris Kyle's story, American Sniper, turned into the biggest of 2014's releases at the US box office. And while it's not had quite the same impact outside of the US (it's taken $341 million in America, $175 million elsewhere), it's proven to be the biggest box office success of Eastwood's directorial career. It snagged a few Oscar nominations as well.
One of the constant discussion points surrounding the movie is its stance on war itself. American Sniper has been regarded in many quarters as a pro-war film, a rarity in Hollywood, in part because it only shows one side of the story it's telling.
Yet Eastwood has been chatting about the film when chatting to students are Loyola Marymount University School Of Film & TV. When asked if he thought his film glorified war, he said that "I think it’s nice for veterans, because it shows what they go through, and that life — and the wives and families of veterans. It has a great indication of the stresses they are under. And I think that all adds up to kind of an anti-war [message]."
Reiterating that he himself is anti-war, Eastwood did acknowledge that "it just depends on how you want to look at it."
