The Spider-Man reboot means it's farewell to Sally Field's Aunt May. Not that she thought the spin-off movie was going to happen either
NewsOne of the oddest rumours to spring up last year was that of a proposed spin-off for the Aunt May character in Sony's Spider-Man universe. The rumor was debunked in about the time it took for most of us to stop chuckling at it, but then it was indicative of where the Spider-Man movie series had ended up towards the end of last 2014. A little bit lost, with any rumor feeling plausible.
Since then, of course, Marvel and Sony have got together to chart a firmer course for the Spider-Man movies. Spider-Man is now part of the Marvel cinematic universe, is expected to appear in next year's Captain America: Civil War, and will get a new standalone movie in the summer of 2017.
And that means that Sally Field, for one, won't be part of future Spider-Man films. As she told E! Online, "it was fun because it was just a great group," adding that Andrew Garfield was the "most perfect fellow to work with, so I will miss him, but I'll find him."
However, the question of that Aunt May movie did come up, and Field found the idea as chortlesome as everyone else. "Aunt May spin off? And make her the lead? What woudl you do with here?", she said to the Huffington Post. "She has no special powers whatsoever. She was a housewife waiting for the kids to come home. I think they did that: it was called The Donna Reed Show."
The standalone Spider-Man film arrives on July 28th 2017. Sally Field will not be in it.
