Director Bryan Singer has announced the casting of Lana Condor in the role of Jubilee for X-Men: Apocalypse.
NewsFans have been speculating about whether the complete “original five” teammates (in comic book terms) will be appearing in X-Men: Apocalypse. Well, Bryan Singer just went ahead and threw Jubilee into the mix. Yep, everyone’s favorite “arcade baby” from the 1990s X-Men: The Animated Series is making her way to the big screen. Singer made the announcement via Instagram, revealing that newcomer Lana Condor will be making her acting debut in the role.
Wrote Singer, “I’d officially like to welcome our newest mutant #JubilationLee, #Jubilee @LanaCondor” to X-Men: Apocalypse.
Jubilee was created by Chris Claremont and Marc Silvestri, who introduced her Uncanny X-Men #244. Meant to be the new “youngest core member” (think replacement teenager for a growing Kitty Pryde), Jubilee stood out for her ‘80s attitude, fashion sense (a yellow rain coat?), and bizarre mutant powers which involve “energy plasmoids.” Let’s just call them fireworks.
Of course, she grew to her biggest prominence when she was introduced in X-Men: The Animated Series in 1992, which just so happens to be having a revival of sorts on the page this summer.
The part of Jubilee has been played in both X-Men (2002) and X2 (2003) by Katrina Florence and Kea Wong, respectively. Thus, we suspect that she may likewise be little more than a cameo in Apocalypse.
X-Men: Apocalypse picks up with our period piece jumping mutants in 1983 when a new malevolent force of ancient power named Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) is released. Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), and Beast must join forces when faced with this onslaught. They will also be accmpoanied by a young cast of heroes that includes Scott Summers (Tye Sheridan), Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), and Ororo Munroe (Alexandra Shipp). It opens May 27, 2016.
