Sony's franchise-mania continues, but at least we'll get a live-action Robotech movie out of the deal!
NewsAs far as I'm concerned, they can make Pacific Rim movies until I'm cold in the ground somewhere and I will see and cherish every last one of 'em. But a Robotech movie? That's another kind of dream. And it's happening.
Sony now has the rights to make a live-action Robotech movie. Warner Bros. had 'em before, but that's all over now. Are giant robots the new superheroes? Sony is probably hoping so. As long as they don't try and cross this over with their Ghostbusters universe, all should be well.
Robotech is moving forward with 300 producers Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton and writer Michael Gordon (also from 300, and who worked on the similarly toy-friendly GI Joe). Nunnari and Canton had come aboard when the project was at Warner Bros., and now they'll be making it for Sony.
“Robotech is unique in that it has always been a marriage of spectacle with human characters that seem drawn from life,” said Columbia Pictures chief Michael De Luca in a statement. “That’s why we are so excited to be working with Mark and Gianni as we move forward on this project. With a history that offers an epic love triangle, a renegade hero, and a world on the brink of extinction, Robotech offers a wide scope and a rich and impressive universe where the story possibilities are endless.”
“I’m thrilled to be back in business with Sony Pictures and Gianni and I look forward to working with the studio on this global franchise-driven opportunity,” said Canton, who ran the studio in the 1990s. “Robotech is a very significant and legendary part of the growth of anime into the force that it is today, and we’re excited to be adapting it for modern audiences.”
“When the rights to Robotech became available we jumped; Mark and I knew it had what big movies in today’s world must have if they want to grab everyone: insane visuals and powerful themes,” said Nunnari. “The characters in Robotech wrestle with both the destructive and redemptive powers of technology; nothing is more relevant today than that.”
We want to see more Robotech, and we wrote about what we expect from it right here.
