Maybe it's a Gremlins reboot, or maybe it's Gremlins 3. Either way, it's got a new writer.
It would appear that word that the new Gremlinsmovie is "out of steam" was premature. Carl Ellsworth (Goosebumps) has just come on board as writer on the long-threatened/rumored project. Whether it actually gets off the ground this time is another story.
Things have gone back and forth on this Gremlinsproject for ages. Is it a sequel? Is it a reboot? The Deadlinestory announcing Ellsworth's involvement calls it a "revamp," which opens up a host of hellish semantic possibilities.
I'm all in favor of a new Gremlinsmovie, and there's really no reason this one has to be a reboot or remake. Keep the basic mythology, and put the title characters at odds with a new batch of hapless humans. There are ample ties to the original around, anyway. Chris Columbus (who wrote the original) is producing along with Steven Spielberg, and there had been rumors Columbus would direct.
Or, y'know, they could get Joe Dante on the phone.
