Sony Pictures is producing Stephen King's The Dark Tower. Hot potato!
NewsSony Pictures wants its franchises bad. The studio plans to produce Stephen King's The Dark Tower, which has been in development hell for almost a decade.
Sony will team up with Media Rights Capital to produce a potential series of films as well as a complimentary TV series, which has become the norm for a property as expansive as The Dark Tower universe.

Both Universal and Warner Bros. have had a chance to produce the adaptations, but have developed cold feet over the years. Ron Howard, who has been trying to produce and direct these films since the dawn of man, will try once again to push this film into production. He is producing along with Akiva Goldsman and Erica Huggins.
Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner (Fringe) have re-written the script, which insiders say adapts the first book of the series, The Gunslinger.
Tom Rothman, the new chairman of Sony Pictures, said of the acquisition: “There are few projects out there that compare with the scope, vision, complex characters and fully drawn world that Stephen King has created with The Dark Tower. I am a giant fan. And, as Stephen himself does, we love the direction that Akiva and Jeff have taken. This is a great opportunity for a director to put his or her stamp on a cool global franchise."
