The man who helmed Project Almanac may morph into the director for the big screen Power Rangers reboot.

News

It’s been months since we’ve heard anything official about the Power Rangers movie. But now we get word that Saban and Lionsgate are in negotiations to bring on Dean Israelite as director. Israelite is best known for directing this year's, Project Almanac a film that featured a group of teenagers as its main cast, so at least he’s got that down (what with Power Rangers featuring teenagers in spandex and all).

With a release date of 2016, Saban needs to get moving. Power Rangers isn't just something you can slap together if you want it to succeed. They need to lock a director and get a new producer on board since Roberto Orci left the project. The only thing that seems to be chugging along is the script, and Zack Stentz has hinted on Twitter that a first draft is finished.

So, is Dean Israelite a good choice? Well, Project Almanac made money on its relatively small budget, so that’s a selling point. One can draw comparisons to Gareth Edwards who had directed the somewhat obscure film Monsters and was given the task of helming Godzilla, which was quite a leap indeed.

Saban and Lionsgate must have a lot of faith in Israelite; let’s just hope it pays off. It’s no secret that Lionsgate would love Power Rangers to be the next big film franchise...perhaps even a cinematic universe? It’s trying to squeeze all it can out of The Hunger Games, despite running through the original material. Power Rangers has a 22 year ongoing history that can be drawn upon for endless sequels and spin offs.

So you know, no pressure on Israelite or anything.
