Bryan Singer announces that The Newsroom's Olivia Munn has been cast as Psylocke in next year's X-Men: Apocalypse.

And the roster of new X-Men: Apocalypse mutants keeps growing. The film that initially looked to be the finale to the “First Class Trilogy” era increasingly seems to be a none-too-subtle way to introduce the next generation of mutants and the actors who play them. Look no further than at Monday’s afternoon announcement that Olivia Munn will be playing Psylocke in X-Men: Apocalypse.

Director Bryan Singer ushered the reveal in what has become his patented surprise social media blast. Taking to Instagram, Singer wrote, “Excited to welcome @oliviamunn as Betsy Bradock! #Psylocke.”

Munn will be making the official live action debut of the character (who may or may not have been present in a cameo during the hastily forgotten X-Men: The Last Stand). Psylocke is also the third psychic mutant to be present in the movie, which also includes James McAvoy reprising the role of Charles Xavier and Sophie Turner making her own debut as a young Jean Grey. Something tells me that psychics might be part of Apocalypse’s nefarious designs.

Munn just appeared in January’s less than sparkling Mortdecai. But she also has recently wrapped up a run on the mostly well-received The Newsroom at HBO and was featured in last year’s horror film, Deliver Us From Evil. She also served for a brief time as a Daily Show correspondent.

X-Men: Apocalypse picks up with our period piece jumping mutants in 1983 when a new malevolent force of ancient power named Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) is released. Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), and Beast (Nicholas Hoult) must join forces when faced with this onslaught. They will also be accmpoanied by a young cast of heroes that includes Scott Summers (Tye Sheridan), Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), and Ororo Munroe (Alexandra Shipp). It opens May 27, 2016.
