Michelle MacLaren has left the director's chair for the Wonder Woman movie vacant.

Michelle MacLaren, the Breaking Bad and Game of Thronesdirector who we heralded as a solid choice for the job of Wonder Woman director, has left the project at Warner Bros. As of this writing, there is no word on her potential replacement.

Warner Bros. released a brief statement:

“Given creative differences, Warner Bros. and Michelle MacLaren have decided not to move forward with plans to develop and direct Wonder Woman together.”

It's unclear how far into the development process the Wonder Woman movie is. Warner Bros. is developing several scripts, one by Panwriter Jason Fuchs. The Hollywood Reporter indicates that Ms. MacLaren was "heavily involved" in the development of these scripts, so whatever "creative differences" drove her off the project would appear to be substantial.

Meanwhile, Varietyreports that they're ready to start screen-testing for the film's male lead, presumably Steve Trevor, and that four actors have been lined up. This would indicate that word that Scott Eastwood is playing Steve Trevor in the Suicide Squadmovie is incorrect. Good luck untangling that, but we'll be looking for more info.

Wonder Woman is scheduled for release on June 23rd, 2017. There's still plenty of time to get one of these scripts in order and find a new director. But if someone with as much cooperative TV creative experience as Michelle MacLaren found Warner Bros. a little stifling, this might not bode well for this movie. We'll keep an eye out for more developments.
