Watch a new trailer that shows the legacy of George Miller's Road Warrior franchise, which is about to continue with Mad Max: Fury Road.

Very rarely does a franchise continue with the same director 36 years after he launched the first film. But here we are, about a month out from the hotly anticipated Mad Max: Fury Road. Indeed, if judging by the trailers this is one “reboot” that appears to be carrying over much of what made films like Mad Max and The Road Warrior beloved in the 1980s, but with even more slick action and effects.

But for those worried that Mad Max has lost its way, Fury Road has released a new trailer paying its respects to the legacy of the franchise and the films (particularly Road Warrior) that came before it.

Picking up on the continued post-apocalyptic and dystopian nightmares of George Miller’s previous Mad Max films, Mad Max: Fury Road finds Max Rockatanasky (Tom Hardy) captured by a ruthless gang leader (Hugh Keays-Byrne) that will make short work of the former lawman if not for the intervention of Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron). She saves Max because she wants him to guide her and five rescued would-be sex slaves for the gang across the desert and to freedom. Madness and many car crashes ensue.

Mad Max: Fury Road opens May 15, 2015.
