The eagerly-awaited documentary exploring why Tim Burton's Superman Lives, starring Nicolas Cage, never happened is finally ready.
The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened? aims to tell the story of the most high profile superhero movie that never, ever got made.
For years, Warner Bros. were desperate to bring the "Death of Superman" storyline to the screen. Along the way they enlisted Batman's Tim Burton to direct, inexplicably cast Nicolas Cage as Superman, and wrote a host of screenplays (Kevin Smith did two drafts, Wesley Strick, Dan Gilroy, etc) all dealing with (more or less) the same basic theme: the death of Supes. The film came so close to production that there were sets and costumes created, and special effects tests done.
Director Jon Schnepp has gone to great lengths to bring you this story, and from the looks of these trailers, what he has compiled looks brilliant. While tons of Superman Lives imagery has appeared online through the years, the trailers for this documentary are full of all sorts of things that have never seen the light of day, including a special effects test with Nic Cage as Superman flying/landing.
The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened? is finally ready, and will get a limited theatrical release on May 1st, before swooping in worldwide on VOD on July 9th.
