Wes Craven is developing People Under the Stairs for TV.
NewsPeople Under the Stairswas one of the most cerebrally frightening commercial horror flicks of the early nineties. It worked on the surface horror level but also as a subliminal look into the minds of traumatized children and what they can splinter into.
Master horror writer-director Wes Craven, who is probably best known for A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream, is going to bring those People Under the Stairs from his 1991 into a television series for Syfy. Craven will executive produce a pilot based on an updated version The People Under the Stairs. According to reports, the television version will be a cross between The Amityville Horror and Downton Abbey.
“Universal Cable Productions is the home of an amazing slate of TV programming, and I’m delighted to be working with them,” Craven said in a statement. “Fasten your seatbelts.”
It’s all part of a deal Craven signed in blood with Universal Cable Productions and Syfy that will also see TV adaptations of the Daryl Gregory novel We Are All Completely Fine and Disciples.
“Wes is an icon whose films have captivated audiences for decades. We’re thrilled to be working with him, and to be able to bring his enormous talent and unique blend of horror, humor and intelligence to television,” Dawn Olmstead, executive vice president of development at UCP said in a statement.
The pilot will be written by Reisz (Shadowhunters, Unforgettable). Craven will write the script and direct the pilot of We Are All Completely Fine.
“At Syfy, we’re working with the most iconic names in the genre, and we couldn’t be more excited to partner with Wes Craven and UCP on these initial projects,” said Bill McGoldrick, Syfy’s exec VP of original content.
The original movie starred Everett McGill and Wendy Robie.
