It’s time to start running again.
NewsWarner Bros. Pictures is putting The Fugitive back on its feet. According to Deadline, a new “installment” of the property is being developed, although whether that means a sequel, a remake, a reboot or some other damn thing is not clear. Christina Hodson is writing the script and the producers of the 1993 movie, Arnold and Anne Kopelson, are also on board. Not known: whether Harrison Ford or Tommy Lee Jones will also return.
The original film was based on the hit TV series that starred David Janssen as a doctor on the run after being falsely accused of murdering his wife, with a determined cop always just a step or two behind him. Ford played the doctor and Jones won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor as the U.S. marshal in the movie version, which improved on what was already an acclaimed series (the show’s finale was watched by literally half the homes that had TVs at the time). The movie was a colossal hit and even nabbed a Best Picture nomination, rare for an action film but indicative of just how classy and well-done the movie was.
Jones reprised his role in a semi-sequel called U.S. Marshals that featured Wesley Snipes as the man on the lam instead of Ford, but no one talks about that movie anymore. Can a new version of The Fugitiverecreate the excitement of the original? We’re now destined to find out.
