Director Brad Peyton reveals why Lobo, starring Dwayne Johnson, hasn't made it to the DC movie universe yet...

News

Before Warner Bros announced its slate of films for the DC cinematic universe, one project that had been bubbling along was Lobo. This had been mooted to feature Dwayne Johnson on the lead role, with Journey 2 The Mysterious Island and San Andreas helmer Brad Peyton set to direct (after Guy Ritchie evenutally left the project). However, when the announcement about the assorted DC films came along, Lobowas nowhere to be seen, and Johnson has since signed up to play Black Adam in Shazaminstead.

So: what happened?

"I think what's happening with DC is that they have prioritised what they need to make first in order to kind of lay the foundations for the DC universe", Peyton told Coming Soon. "This is what I believe is happening just from what they've been talking about. They're talking about Justice League, Batman v Superman, and going into Flash, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman. Those are kind of the pillars of that universe."

It does sound like the Loboproject got quite far, though. "I was really happy with the script. I talked with Dwayne about it. Joel Silver [producer] and I had a really amazing meeting about it. I did a rewrite of the script and was really, really excited for it. In their estimation, though, he wasn't one of those main guys."

He admitted that he understood Warner Bros' approach, to set the tone of DC films with its biggest characters, noting that only now with Marvel, "they're now doing smaller characters like Ant-Manand Guardians Of The Galaxy."

Could Loboultimately happen then? Maybe. "I think there's going to be a really amazing time for Loboand I think people are going to realize, certainly once they revisit it, what they're sitting on," adding "fingers crossed it comes to fruition at some point."

However, with DC films now mapped out until 2020, even if Lobodoes burst back into life, it's going to be a long time before we see it. More as we hear it...
