The Flash Movie: Phil Lord Offers Update

One of the upcoming DC superhero movies is, unsurprisingly, The Flash. But which Flash will it be?

Mike Cecchini

The Flashmovie might have a bit of an uphill battle ahead of it. For starters, the reaction to trailer for the film launching the wider DC cinematic universe, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, has been a little mixed. Then there's the fact that we still have to (possibly) meet Flash in a cameo in that film, before he moves on to Justice League: Part One, and then finally his own solo film in 2018.

Oh, and then there's the matter of the enormously popular TV series where Grant Gustin has quickly carved out a place in the hearts of fans as the essential Barry Allen.

The good news is that The Flashmovie has Phil Lord and Chris Miller in its corner as writers and quite possibly directors as well. There's been some speculation that perhaps since we have Barry Allen on TV we'd get a different Flash on screen when Ezra Miller takes the role. That is apparently not the case, according to Phil Lord, who says that it will indeed be Barry Allen.

But he's aware of the perception of the TV show. "We’re trying to break a story. It’s interesting, because there’s a really popular TV show out there, and we’re trying to carve out space for the movie that’s apart from that. I think we’re doing alright...we’re more trying to stick with the cinematic universe… it really is its own thing, and kind of a stand-alone movie."

Whether he's just referring to "stand-alone" as something that isn't connected to the TV series or something that is set a little bit apart from the Justice League movies is unclear at this time.

The Flash opens on March 23rd, 2018.
