As he apologies for Batman & Robin again, George Clooney's been chatting about being directed by Joel Schumacher in a Batman film...
NewsGeorge Clooney has been on the promotional tour for Tomorrowland over the past week or two, and part of that was a stop on Graham Norton's sofa. On last week's The Graham Norton Show, Clooney talked about visiting Comic-Con with Tomorrowland, and how it's the first film really that he's been able to take there.
Well, there was Batman & Robin, of course, a film for which he apologized on his New York Comic-Con visit last autumn. "I always apologize for Batman & Robin" he said on the show, not for the first time describing the movie as "a disaster."
"I actually thought I'd destroyed the franchise", he added, "but I thought at the time this was going to be a very good career move. It wasn't."
He then talked about director Joel Schumacher, and his directorial style. "He would direct with a microphone and a speaker", Clooney said. "I'm bolted into this suit, I can't move, and he would literally go... he would direct you as if you had some emotional scene. 'Okay people. George, your parents are dead, you have nothing to live for, action.'" To which Clooney would go "I'm Batman", and Schumacher would go "And cut!"
We should note that Clooney was sounding affectionate in his memories of working with Schumacher on the movie. But as his apology is the latest evidence that he's not blind to the many faults of Batman & Robin...
