Some new names (and some familiar ones) tested for Spider-Man in front of Marvel executives in Atlanta over the weekend...

UPDATED:

We're getting closer to a new Spider-Man. Tom Holland, Asa Butterfield, Judah Lewis, Matthew Lintz, Charlie Plummer, and Charlie Rowe are reported to have done screen-tests for Marvel and Sony executives in Atlanta, which happens to be where Captain America: Civil War is filming. It's expected that Peter Parker will make an appearance in that film before his new solo movie lands in 2017.

Lewis, Lintz, Plummer, and Rowe are new names in the mix (if you scroll down to our original story, there were some different young men in the mix with Holland and Butterfield). They continue to skew this role pretty young, though. Holland and Butterfield are 18, Charlie Rowe is reported as 19, and Plummer, Lewis, and Lintz are reported to be "as young as 14" by The Hollywood Reporter(who broke the news).

Previously, we reported that Asa Butterfield was in serious negotiations with Marvel for the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. That was apparently premature. Expect an official announcement soon, since Spidey is likely to make an appearance in Captain America: Civil War, and that flick just began production. That news came via El Mayimbe, who sounded pretty positive that it was close to a done deal. Asa Butterfield has been reported as a "frontrunner" for the role since April, but apparently any word that he was about to sign on were premature.

Expect this one to develop quickly, as Captain America: Civil War is already in production, and they'll have to move quickly to start getting the solo film together. We'll keep an eye out for an official announcement.

Original Story: April 22nd, 2015...

Marvel will probably choose their new Spider-Man actor in the next few weeks, allowing them to make an announcement and possibly allow him to debut in Captain America: Civil War. They've been keeping things pretty quiet, but now we have five names, although there may be others.

Nat Wolff, Asa Butterfield, Tom Holland, Timothee Chalamet, and Liam James are among the actors being considered for Peter Parker. Perhaps the most intriguing name on this list is Asa Butterfield, who had similar franchise ambitions in the ill-fated Ender's Game and who played the lead in the underrated Hugo.

The casting reinforces everything we've been hearing recently about the direction Marvel is going for their new Peter Parker, as three of the five are 18 years old, and the oldest is 20. Get ready for a Peter Parker who can handle the high school scene for at least a few movies.

As far as we know, Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods) is the main contender to direct the first Marvel Spider-Man movie, which is scheduled to open on July 28th, 2017. More on this as we get it.
