Fast & Furious 7 Breaks Another Milestone

Fast & Furious 7 has now crashed through yet another box office milestone, becoming just the fourth film ever to cross $1.5b billion at the global box office. The film's take now stands at $1.506 billion In the next few days, it should pass the $1.518 billion mark set by the original Avengers movie, to become the third biggest film of all time. That said, Avengers: Age Of Ultron is on course to take that crown not long after.

The staggering growth of the Fast & Furious movies has continued in spectacular style these past few weeks. Fast & Furious 7 has now topped the US box office for four weeks in a row, and the movie has - by some distance - become the most successful of the franchise to date. Fast & Furious 6, for instance, grossed $788 million worldwide, and that in turn was a significant jump from Fast & Furious 5.

Neither, though, can hold a box office torch to Fast & Furious 7. The film has now taken $320 million in the US alone, but even more than that, it's taken $1 billion elsewhere in the world. Its current combined take - and it's a long way from running out of (ahem) gas - is $1.32 billionn.

That means it's now jumped to become the fifth biggest film of all time at the global box office (not inflation adjusted), having overtaken Frozen this past weekend. By the end of its run, it'll also have usurped Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2, and it's got a good shot at The Avengers' $1.51 billion. If it beats that, then Fast & Furious 7 could be cinema's third biggest film of all time (although Avengers: Age Of Ultron may do similarly massive numbers). If someone had offered you that bet after Tokyo Drift grossed $158 million worldwide in 2006, you might just have thought them 'ambitious.'

Fast & Furious 8 will have some job to surmount the seventh film's take. We'll see how it manages it when it's released in April 2017...
