James Gunn has offered what we'll just consider an official update on the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 script.
Well, the first draft of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is complete. The problem is that it isn't called Guardians of the Galaxy 2. What's it called? We don't know. And James Gunn isn't ready to say yet.

Could the spoiler be right there in the title? What if it's Guardians of the Galaxy: Planet Hulk? I'm joking. I'm reasonably certain that's not what it is. But that would be cool, wouldn't it?
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Plot
So, we're ruling out Planet Hulk...for now. No, seriously, the Hulk won't show up. Gunn has already promised that the movie is "not really based on anything."
For one thing, expect them to solve the mystery of Star-Lord's father in this one. "At its heart, Guardians is a story about families. And if the first film was about him and his mother, this is a story about fathers."
He expanded on that a little bit for us:
“You’ll have to wait and see but it’s very different. There are things in the comic book that on film seemed to come out a little too Star Wars to me. I’m not a great fan of the name J’son. So there’ll be a lot of differences from what’s in there."
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Villain
It's more than a safe bet that Josh Brolin will return as Thanos, so we can get that right out of the way.
Recently, though, Mr. Gunn also spoke about who won't be appearing in the sequel, solving a couple of Marvel movie rights issues in the process. If you were hoping to see the cosmic end of Marvel Studios take a trip to the Shi'ar Empire or take on Kang the Conqueror, well...forget it. Those concepts are locked up at Fox. The good news is that maybe we'll get to see the X-Men go into space one day, then!
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Release Date
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (or whatever the hell it's called) is scheduled for release on May 5th, 2017. It will begin shooting at Pinewoo Studios in London in early 2016.

As of now, it sounds like everybody who survived the first film will be back for this one. We'll let you know more about new characters as soon as we hear anything.
