Justin Lin recalls the point where J.J. Abrams called him, and offered him the Star Trek job. Plus, a further hint as to the new film.

The next Star Trek movie is believed to go by the name of Star Trek Beyond. Right about now, Simon Pegg and Doug Jung should be done with the screenplay too, and thus new director Justin Lin -- taking over from J.J. Abrams -- will soon be about to start production.

Chatting to Deadline, Lin has now revealed how he got the Star Trek job in the first place, revealing that "I was in the last week shooting True Detective when J.J. Abrams called last December."

As Lin recalled, "he asked me, do you like Star Trek? If you do, you should take this, be bold, and just go for it. I thought about how much a part of my life Star Trek was. All my friends were Star Wars kids but I didn’t go to the movies, so I was the Star Trek kid. Thinking about this, it became a very personal and very emotional decision."

So what can be expect from Lin's first Star Trek adventure? "There's still alot to be mined from these characters", he said. "They haven't really gone on their five-year mission, so what we experienced in the TV show hasn't been touched on yet."

This is promising, and ties into what Simon Pegg has revealed about the screenplay thus far. Lin added that it "sets up an opportunity for exploration and the deeper you go, the more you are examining humanity. Those are the things that I absorbed as a kid and hope to tap into and embrace and celebrate."

It certainly sounds more Star Trek than the last film. Star Trek Beyond (we'll go with that title until they tell us otherwise) is set for release on July 8th 2016. More on the film as we hear it...

Deadline.
