Joseph Gordon-Levitt says that The Sandman movie is still coming along, but it's going to be different than most of its peers.

News

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is still working on a movie adaptation of Neil Gaiman's famed Sandman series, and he's taking advice from Gaiman himself.

Describing the ongoing process of adaptation as "slow but steady," he explained how The Sandman will differ from most other comic book movies.

“Big spectacular action movies are generally about crime fighters fighting crime and blowing sh-t up. This has nothing to do with that...it was actually one of the things that Neil Gaiman said to me, he said ‘Don’t have any punching.’ Because he never does. If you read the comics, Morpheus doesn’t punch anybody. That’s not what he does."

Anybody familiar with The Sandman graphic novels shouldn't be surprised by any of this. But there's something a little more interesting at work here other than the fact that Gordon-Levitt and company don't seem terribly interested in bowing to current superhero movie convention. Pointing out that Sandman was an epic story that sprawled over many volumes and nearly a decade, JGL said "to try to take that and make it into something that’s a feature film — a movie that has a beginning, middle, and end — is complicated.”

In other words, this isn't just an adaptation of Preludes & Nocturnes or A Doll's House or any of the Sandman collected editions. It's possible that this isn't even being made with one eye on multiple sequels. The Sandman movie might just turn out to be a big screen interpretation of Neil Gaiman's most famous work, and not just another franchise.

We'll keep an eye out for more, but right now there's nothing resembling a release date. Jack Thorne is writing the screenplay, from a treatment by David S. Goyer.
