Matthew Vaughn confirms that he is writing Kingsman 2 with an eye on possibly directing it.
NewsIf you are like us, then one of the most enjoyable movie moments of 2015 still remains Colin Firth rocking out to “Free Bird” in a baptism of blood at Bigoted Southern Church #235 in Kingsman: The Secret Service. It is a zany and purely gonzo moment of comic book movie bliss from Matthew Vaughn. Now the Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class writer-director is revealing that he is returning to the world of spymania and finely tailored suits—at least as the screenwriter.
While chatting with Yahoo!, Vaughn confirmed that a Kingsman sequel is in production and the he is even in the screenwriting process (presumably and hopefully with Jane Goldman by his proverbial typewriter).
“Well, the good news is that I’m writing it next door at the moment,” Vaughn said. “If I think I can get the script good enough, then we are making it. We are doing our damndest to make it happen.”
Vaughn even goes so far as to suggest that if he can get the script to his liking that he’ll probably be directing it.
Says Vaughn, “I’m in love with these characters and I want to work with them again, so I’ll probably be breaking the rule of me tending not to make sequels.”
Vaughn adapted Kingsman: The Secret Service with Jane Goldman from a graphic novel by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons. That 2012 Icon Comics miniseries inspired the much more high-concept and Bondmania (by way of Sean Connery and Roger Moore) influenced film, which proved that bloody violent, R-rated action movies can do great for Fox during Valentine’s Day weekend. Indeed, its $400 million global box office take likely paved the way for Deadpool. Hopefully, we’ll see Eggsy with his umbrella again soon.
