139 movie sequels currently in the works

Think Hollywood is bereft of original ideas? You just might after this. Here's our look at the assorted movie sequels currently in the works. Since we last did a list like this, we've dropped films that seem to have died a death - Wanted 2, Spring Breakers 2 - but we'll keep this rundown up to date over the coming month.

Without further ado...

23 Jump Street

Sony is pressing ahead with a third Jump Street movie, as well as a possible Jump Street vs Men In Black film, and a female-headlined spin-off. For 23 Jump Street specifically, Rodney Rothman is back and working on the script (he wrote the second one). It's unclear yet if Chris Miller and Phil Lord can find breathing space in their schedule to direct. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are both expected back, though.

3 Guns

The enjoyable action comedy 2 Gunsproved to be a box office success, albeit quite a modest one. Nonetheless, it put enough money in the bank for producer Randal Emmett to push for a sequel.

It'll be an adaptation of Steven Grant's comic book, 3 Guns, but the immediate stumbling block is the commitment of Baltasar Kormakur to making the film Everest, which finally arrives later this year. After that, if Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg are agreeable, then the film may happen. That said, we've heard nothing on 3Guns for a little while now, so hopes of this one happening may be dwindling...

Alan Partridge 2

No fresh progress on this one, save for the fact that Steve Coogan still has it on his radar. Coogan is currently penning a follow-up to the Alan Partidge autobiography, I Partridge. After that, his attention may well turn back to bringing Norwich's finest DJ back to the big screen.

Alice Through The Looking Glass

Tim Burton won't be back for the sequel to his $1bn-grossing take on Alice In Wonderland, with the director's chair instead being occupied by The Muppets and Muppets Most Wanteddirector James Bobin. He's The film is now in post-production, ahead of its release on May 27th 2016. Johnny Depp, Mia Wasikowska and Helen Bonham-Carter lead the returnees.

Alien 5

Neill Blomkamp looks like he's lured Sigourney Weaver back for one more go as Ripley, in an intriguing-sounding Aliensequel.

We're going to get Prometheus 2 first by the looks of things (we're coming to that a little later), and we'd imagine that Alien 5 is likely to arrive in 2017 at some point.

Allegiant - Part 1 and Part 2

The Divergentseries of movies hasn't really blown us away so far, with Shailene Woodley's performance as Tris the one thing that's keeping us holding in there. Certainly Insurgent, directed by Robert Schwentke, was a step backward. Schwentke has the job of putting the last two announced movies to date together, and is filming Allegiant Part 1 for release in March 2016, with the concluding chapter in March 2017. The success of those will determine whether Veronica Roth's prequel book, Four, is also filmed.

Alvin And The Chipmunks 4

It's arriving in February 2016. It is called Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Road Chip. Walt Becker (Wild Hogs, Van Wilder: Party Liaison) is directing. Can we move on now?

American Pie 5

Just one flicker of progress of late with regards a new American Pie movie. That came from actress Tara Reid, who hinted in May 2015 that talks are underway on a new film, and that it's going to potentially be set in Las Vegas. As for further information? Not a sausage.

ATL 2

A surprise sequel to the modest hit ATLis reportedly in the works. The urban drama starred Lauren London and T.I., and the stars have suggested that a new movie is coming. At one stage, T.I. sent out the hashtag '#ATL2 Get Ready', which we and others took as a subtle clue. Warner Bros hasn't officially greenlit the film to our knowledge, though. But there does seem to be some impetus behind this one.

Avatar sequels

There are definitely three Avatarsequels coming, but they seem to get further and further away. James Cameron seems to pretty much have the scripts in place though, and his plan is to shoot the three films pretty much in one go. The most recent update? The confirmation that they've all slipped another year, and that Avatar 2 is due at Christmas 2017,Avatar 3for Christmas 2018, and Avatar 4 for Christmas 2019. Unless they get delayed again. Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Sam Worthington are all due back.

There's even a rumour of an Avatar 5...

Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and 2

The third and fourth Avengersmovies are set to shoot back to back, with Captain America: Civil War directors Joe and Anthony Russo taking over helming duties from Joss Whedon. The films themselves are expected in April 2018 and April 2019, and the focus is likely to be on a relatively new team of Avengers - as teased in Age Of Ultron - and the culmination of the battle for the Infinity Gauntlet.

Bad Boys 3

There's been progress here. For years, Bad Boys 3 has been beholden to the schedules of Michael Bay and Will Smith in particular. Martin Lawrence has always seemed keen, and a lot more available. However, with Michael Bay wrapped up in the world of Transformersfor seemingly a lot more of his life, a new director has entered negotiations. Narcand The A-Teamhelmer Joe Carnahan is likely to take on Bad Boys 3, and we're expecting Will Smith to sign up too.

Bad Santa 2

The sequel that nobody ever seems to rule out. However, it may well be that Bad Santa 2 will finally start shooting in 2015. The likely director is Entourage's Doug Ellin, who teased that the film is likely to shoot from September/October time. Billy Bob Thornton remains attached.

Barbershop 3

Ice Cube is returning, with Malcolm D Lee directing, in the return of the Barbershop movies. There's been some gap, too: Barbershop 2 was released in 2004, Barbershop 3 is arriving in February 2016. Lamorne Morris has joined the cast of the film too.

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice

The sort-of-sequel to Man Of Steelcertainly seems to pick up after the rampant destruction of Zack Snyder's Superman reboot. Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice pits Henry Cavill's Superman against Ben Affleck's Batman, and finds room too to introduce Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred, and a whole host more. The film is due in March 2016.

Beetlejuice 2

Tim Burton hasn't made a habit of doing sequels, but it looks as if he's finally been convinced to make a follow-up to his 80s delight, Beetlejuice. A sequel to it was mooted after the original was first released, yet the noises this time sound far more definite. Burton would direct again, and Michael Keaton has indicated he'll be back in the lead role. Early in 2015, Winona Ryder indicated her involvement too.

The script is being penned by David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith. No firm dates have been announced thus far. Our interview with co-writer of the original, Larry Wilson, is here. 

Beverly Hills Cop 4

Here's what we know so far. Eddie Murphy is keen to make another Beverly Hills Cop film. Brett Ratner is likely to reunite with him after Tower Heistto direct it. Jerry Bruckheimer is back as producer.

However, the film had been tentatively earmarked for March 2016. The problem? It's not in production yet, and Paramount is believed to have put the movie on hold. It's still likely to happen, just not yet. Andre Nemec and Josh Appelbaum have penned the script, which will see Axel Foley head back to his Detroit roots.

Big Hero 6 2

Walt Disney Animation Studios doesn't announce new films until it's good and ready to do so, but rumors persist it's investigating a follow-up to the Oscar-winning Big Hero 6. Directors Don Hall and Chris Williams are both said to be interested.

Bill & Ted 3

Baby steps forward again. Chatting to IGN earlier this year, Keanu Reeves revealed that the film is heading towards the contracts stage and "maybe paying the writers to go and write. There might be some support for making the picture." We hope so, Keanu. We hope so. Alex Winter would also return, we don't know if director Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest) is still involved...

Blade Runner 2

Well, it's definitely happening. Ridley Scott has handed directing duties for Blade Runner 2 over to Sicarioand Prisonershelmer Denis Villeneuve, and some reports suggest early pre-production work has already begin. Hampton Fancher and Michael Green have penned the screenplay.

Ryan Gosling has been heavily linked with a lead role, and Harrison Ford will be back as Rick Deckard. This one is set decades after the end of the first film, and production in earnest will begin in the summer of 2016. We still might not get to see the film until 2018, given the amount of post-production work that's likely to be involved.

Blair Witch Project 3

Well, this one seems to have been resurrected in the last year or so. At the start of the year, co-director of the original Eduardo Sanchez described another film in the series as "inevitable", revealing that talks had been happening with Lionsgate. Progress is slow, though, and it may yet be a couple of years before the Blair Witchtrilogy will be completed.

Bourne, J 4/The Bourne Legacy 2

Two sequels for your money here. First up, Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass have been lured back to the Bourne series, for an adventure that's presumably going to be set after The Bourne Ultimatum. That's the next Bourne movie, and Universal currently has it set for 29th July 2016. Given the length of the previous Greengrass Bourne shoots, it may push things to the wire.

Separate to that is a sequel to Tony Gilroy's The Bourne Legacy, that starred Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross. Less information is available on that one, though, short of the fact that Gilroy won't be directing, and that it's not first in the queue.

Captain America: Civil War

A film with two duties, it seems. Firstly, Captain America: Civil Warwill round off the trilogy of movies that kicked off withCaptain America: The First Avenger. But also, it looks as if it's a sort-of Avengers film too, with Chris Evans' Cap going head to head with Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark.

Also on board this one? Chadwick Boseman will debut as Black Panther, Scarlett Johansson is back as Black Widow, Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, Anthony Mackie as Falcon, Paul Bettany as The Vision, Don Cheadle as War Machine and the new Spider-Man is expected to debut too. Plus there's Daniel Bruhl, Emily VanCamp, Martin Freeman and Frank Grillo too. Crikey.

Joe and Anthony Russo - who helmed Captain America: The Winter Soldier - are directing this one, before moving onto the pair of Avengers: Infinity War movies. Captain America: Civil War lands in May 2016.

Cars 3

Still no further details onCars 3, short of we know it's in the works at Pixar. Given that John Lasseter is focusing his own directorial efforts on Toy Story 4, Cars 3may get a new director. Cars 3 doesn't have a release date yet though.

Cheech And Chong

Legendary screen stoners Tommy Chong and Cheech Marin are reportedly heading for another feature, which sounds like it may be a follow-up to their earlier adventures. The new film will see Cheech and Chong heading to a festival called the Burning Joint. That's all we know right now though, as no fresh information has popped up since the project came to light in mid-2014.

Chronicles Of Narnia: The Silver Chair

We can't find too much substantive on this right now, beyond the fact that another Narnia film is planned, and that The Silver Chair is next to head to the screen. The plan was to get it into cinemas for 2016, but that seems really quite ambitious to us right now.

The Conjuring 2

James Wan follows up Fast & Furious 7 - one of the five biggest movies of all time - with a sequel to his surprise horror smash, The Conjuring. Going by the title of The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist, the film is set for release on October 30th 2016 in the US.

Clerks III

Clerks III is still very much a film that Kevin Smith plans to make, and he seems to have the screenplay in place. However, other movies - and we're going to talk about Mallrats 2 - keep jumping ahead of it in the queue. Jeff Anderson and Brian O'Halloran should lead this one again, with Rosario Dawson, Jason Mewes and Smith himself also before the cameras. We suspect it may not get before the cameras until 2016, though.

The Croods 2

One of DreamWorks Animations' biggest recent successes, and its first franchise starter since How To Train Your Dragon, The Croods is getting a follow-up. It's due in December 2017, and directors Chris Sanders and Kirk De Micco are back for the new film. They're working on the screenplay too, and both Ryan Reynolds and Emma Stone are set to reprise their voice roles from the original.

Crank 3

As the great man himself told us, Jason Statham wants Crank 3. The writer/directors want Crank 3. Lots of people keep asking about Crank 3. It's presumably a case of getting it funded, and finding time to make it. Surely Chev Chelios deserves one last outing?

Despicable Me 3

The Minionsspin-off has been occupying the team at Illumination Entertainment of late, but there's still a full Despicable Me 3 on the way. It's due in cinemas in June 2017. Expect Gru.

Die Hard 6

No fresh news, short of the fact that Die Hard 6 is believed to be in the cooker somewhere. Memo to whoever ends up writing it: make it a lot, lot better than the last one. That is all.

District 10

Neill Blomkamp's current focus is on his upcoming Alien sequel, that we've already discussed. But he also has plans to revisit his Oscar-nominated feature debut, District 9. Speaking while on the promotional trail for Chappie earlier this year, he said that "I have every intention" to do District 10, revealing that he needs to find the time to do it, and will shoot the film somewhere other than Johannesburg. Expect this one to be in the queue for a while, though.

Dodgeball 2

No progress recently, but then Ben Stiller has been busy making Zoolander 2, and Vince Vaughn has been busy making a procession of appalling comedies. Director Rawson Marshall Thurber told us back in 2013 that he wasn't coming back for the next film, but Dodgeball 2 is still mooted. Clay Tarver was said to be working on the script, the last time we heard about it.

Dredd 2

Sob.

The Equalizer 2

Sony has confirmed a September 2016 release date for its sequel to The Equalizer. Denzel Washington is expected to reprise the lead role (there's not too much of a film if he doesn't). Whether director Antoine Fuqua also returns remains to be seen, though.

The Expendables 4 (and more)

Even though The Expendables is heading to the small screen, the cinematic juggernaut is set to lumber on. Hopefully not with a PG-13 rating this time. There's already been chatter about The Expendables 4and 5, with Sylvester Stallone involved. Names that have been touted this time include Hulk Hogan and Pierce Brosnan. No release date has been announced at this stage, though.
