Independence Day: Resurgence unveils its title, several set photos, and its apparently futurist premise.

The aliens are back. Sure, it might be nearly 20 years to the day since the original Independence Day that the sequel hits the big screen, but if this month’s Jurassic World has taught us anything, it is that ‘90s nostalgia is strong with the box office. And now we know what to call the ID4 follow-up… Independence Day: Resurgence.

Like a movie franchise once believed to be as dormant as ‘90s disaster movie catchphrase clichés, it appears that the aliens will indeed emerge again for intergalactic war. It remains a mystery of whether there are any landmarks left for them to blow up, but at the very least we can all bet on a healthy dose of fireworks!

20th Century Fox also released the below synopsis for Independence Day: Resurgence alongside our first look at the title card and several set photos, which include alien (or humanoid?) spacecrafts:

We always knew they were coming back.  After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale.  Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet.  But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force.  Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women  can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

The film is directed by Roland Emmerich, who also co-wrote the screenplay with his original collaborator Dean Devlin; The Amazing Spider-Man’s James Vanderbilt is also credited with co-writing the script. Resurgence picks up with the characters some decades later when the aliens return. Thus it will be up to Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pulman, Vivica A. Fox, Judd Hirsch, Brent Spiner, and newcomers Liam Hemsworth, Jesse Usher, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Travis Tope, Joey King, Maika Monroe, and Sela Ward to save the day.

Independence Day: Resurgence begins the big screen invasion on June 24, 2016.
