Theaters will be possessed by demons starting Friday when James Wan’s The Conjuring opens. Early indications are showing that the demonic possession thriller could be a sleeper hit and New Line is already developing a sequel. New Line has a long tradition of influential horror. The Conjuring was supposed to open on January 25, but the early tests made Warner Bros. move it to summer. It was produced by Rob Cowan, Peter Safran and Tony DeRosa-Gund.
Toby Emmerich, president of New Line, said “Horror is very much a part of the DNA of New Line — Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, The Rite,’ and the Final Destination films. This is as good a horror movie as we’ve ever made…. We think it will have great playability.”
The Conjuring stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren, real life paranormal investigator who also probed the cases that wound up in The Amityville Horror and The Haunting in Connecticut. Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor are the parents of five girls who are terrorized in a haunted house in Rhode Island. New Line is looking at making a franchise out of the investigations of the Warrens.
Emmerich told Variety “We have Lorraine’s permission and support, and we are working on developing another film,” Emmerich said.
