Spring Breakers 2 and Maniac Cop Remake Coming

Two things you never knew you wanted, Spring Breakers 2 and a remake of Maniac Cop are on the way. Wait til you see who's writing them.

Which seems more unlikely to you, Spring Breakers 2 or a remake of Maniac Cop? It's probably Spring Breakers 2, as no genre flick of yesteryear is immune to the remake/reboot. Both are coming some time next year from French film distribution company Wild Bunch.

Spring Breakers: The Second Coming is the story of, well...according to Screen Daily"the Spring Breakers do battle with an extreme militant Christian sect that attempts to convert them."Spring Breakers: The Second Coming is "not a direct sequel although there are allusions to some of the characters in the original,” according to Wild Bunch's Vincent Maraval, who also promises that some cast members from the first film will return.

Unsurprisingly, Jonus Akerlund will direct. But quite surprisingly, Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting, Filth) is writing the film. That puts a bit of a new spin on things.

Speaking of surprising writers, the man writing the screenplay for the Maniac Copremake is none other than the writer behind the comics that Captain America: The Winter Soldier was based on, Ed Brubaker. Original Maniac Cop visionary William Lustig is producing along with Drive's Nicolas Winding Refn.

Wild Bunch also announced a new Paul Verhoeven rape/revenge thriller. “Casting is being finalised," Maraval said. "It’s a very intelligent script but it’s also pure Verhoeven, extremely erotic and perverted, so the actress has to be prepared to take that on.”

Right. Nothing uncomfortable about that.

Game of Thrones’ Lena Headey Set to Star in Upcoming Clive Barker Horror Film

Lena Headey will star in Jacqueline Ess, new horror flick based on Clive Barker story.

Cersei Lannister is scary enough already, with her veiled threats and insatiable hunger for power. Imagine if she had some kind of superpower, like twisting someone’s body around just by thinking of it. There’d be no living with her. Well, get ready to move the Iron Throne to the finished basement because Game of Thrones’ Lena Headey is set to star in a film adaptation of Clive Barker’s Jacqueline Ess.

Lena Headey will play the titular character, Jacqueline Ess, a housewife who gets so bored with life she attempts suicide. The suicide it botched and when she recovers, she finds out she can change people's body shapes simply by thinking about it. She learns by killing her therapist by accident. Then she tries it out on her husband. Then she goes pro and things get fun. Please read the book before seeing it. It gives a new dimension to losing yourself in sex too.

“Jacqueline Ess” was part of Barker’s Books of Blood anthologies. The films Lord of Illusions and Candyman were also culled from Books of Blood. I would love to see a Rob Zombie version of “The Skins of The Fathers.” Rob, if you’re reading this, read that again.

Jacqueline Ess will be directed by Jovanka Vukovic. Vukovic co-wrote the screenplay with Christian Francis and will co-produce the movie with Headey. Vukovic brought us the all-female horror anthology XX and directed the short film The Captured Bird, which was executive produced by Guillermo del Toro.

Clive Barker, who is executive producing, said “Lena Headey is a marvelous performer with an incredible presence. As far as I’m concerned, there is no better choice of actress for the role of Jacqueline. Her beauty and authority will carry the day.”

Lena Headey most starred recently in Warner Bros.’ 300: Rise of an Empire, but is probably best known for playing Sarah Connor on Fox's television series based on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. She also played the drug lord Ma-Ma in Dredd, the Judge Dredd reboot from 2012.

Disney boss confirms at least three Star Wars spin-offs

In the next ten years, we're getting at least three Star Wars spin-off movies, if all goes to plan...

With shooting set to begin in earnest on Star Wars: Episode VII shortly, the first fruits of Disney's deal to buy Lucasfilm will be on their way to the screen. But JJ Abrams' new Star Wars trilogy is but one part of the mix, as Disney had also revealed plans for a series of Star Wars spin-off films.

That's still very much the plan too, according to Disney CEO Bob Iger. In his latest quarterly earnings call to investors - this is a man who seems to spend an awful lot of time on the phone - Iger revealed that "at least three" spin-off films are now planned for the next decade.

Further details? Nope, not at this stage. Last we heard on the films themselves was that Simon Kinberg and Lawrence Kasdan were working on scripts, and the guess is that individual films centred on the characters of Han Solo, Boba Fett and possibly Yoda are quite likely.

The first spin-off is expected in cinemas in 2016.

It's a shame they won't be acknowledging the "expanded universe", since I think Brian Daley's Han Solo novels would provide incredible inspiration. Also, I'd love to see Josh Hartnett as a young Solo.

Not content to simply continue beating a dead horse anymore, the minds in charge of Star Wars have announced the following spinoffs:

Punching a Deceased Wookkiee
Flogging a Decomposed Tauntaun
Kicking an Expired Gungan

Gerard Butler quits Point Break remake

Creative differences and scheduling problems lead to Gerard Butler quitting Point Break...

Outside of those paying for and making the new Point Break movie, we've not yet met a single person who wants a remake of the 1990s classic. But that's just what we're getting. Ericson Core is directing the Point Break remake, Kurt Wimmer has penned the script, Luke Bracey is taking on the role played by Keanu Reeves, whilst the part taken by Patrick Swayze in the first film has gone to Gerard Butler for the new one.

Well at least it had. News has now broken that Butler has quit the new take on Point Break. The Hollywood Reporter puts this down to "a confluence of factors". We put that quote in because you don't see the word confluence enough. Consider that rectified.

Anyway, factor one is a scheduling problem. Point Break starts full production in late June, whilst Butler also has to squeeze in the shoot for London Has Fallen before the year is out. Furthermore, "there have been creative differences", which are also believed to have contributed. Whichever is the stronger reason, Butler won't be part of the new Point Break.

It's still full steam ahead for the project though. That late June start date is still set to happen, and Butler's replacement will be announced in due course.

Joe Carnahan: Death Wish remake "may be coming back"

It sounds as if director Joe Carnahan is going to have another go at getting Death Wish remade...

There's a strong argument that Michael Winner's Death Wish, starring Charles Bronson, has been remade several times already. Notwithstanding the collection of sequels, there have been plenty of films that have effectively told the same story. Take the Neil Jordan movie The Brave One, starring Jodie Foster, for a start.

But an official remake? At one stage, it was a project that Joe Carnahan (The Grey, The A-Team) was circling. Then it seemed to fall apart. However now, the new Death Wish may be back on the cards.

Chatting to Slash Film, Carnahan was asked about Death Wish, and he told the site that "you know what's interesting about that? [Death Wish] may be coming back around because that script, to me, is so special and so… that’s one that I’ll pay them to do, you know what I mean?"

Carnahan added that "if that means grovelling and apologising for past behaviours and so on and making that right, that might be what I have to do. That’s how strong that I feel about that. But yeah, in that incarnation it was not right. And I felt I would have been letting my script down".

Presumably, Carnahan is happier with the material he's working with now. But we suspect there's still some way to go before we get his Death Wish remake. We'll keep you posted...

The Mummy reboot director quits project

More creative differences, as director Andy Muschietti departs Universal's reboot of The Mummy...

Universal has high hopes for its latest reboot of The Mummy franchise, which is currently scheduled to land in cinemas in 2016. But it's hit a problem. The studio had hired the director of Mama, Andy Muschietti, to helm the new Mummy film, and Muschietti himself passed on a project called Bird Box to make the movie. However, he's now quit The Mummy, with The Wrap reporting "creative differences" as the reason why.

Bird Box is still a possibility for Muschietti, a director Universal remains keen to work with. But the search is on for a new Mummy director. Len Wiseman had also been attached to the project at one stage, but he's long since moved on too.

Muschietti's departure from The Mummy is described as "amicable". More news on the film as we get it.

Andy Buckley

Andy Buckley is making the jump from The Office to Jurassic Park 4...

The casting news continues for the now-shooting Jurassic World. The movie, which is being directed by Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed), already has a cast that includes Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D'Onofrio and Irrfan Khan. And the latest addition to the line-up? That'd be Andy Buckley.

To date, Buckley is best known for his work on The Office (the American version), where he played David Wallace, the CEO of the firm. It's unclear what role he's taken on in Jurassic World.

One other Jurassic World thing: Legendary Entertainment has taken on co-financing as part of its deal with Universal. The two are also joining forces to finance Dracula Untold, which will star Luke Evans.

Jurassic World is due in cinemas in June 2015.

The Amazing Spider-Man 3: 9 Actresses Who Could Play Mary Jane Watson

Mary Jane Watson Comic

With recent revelations in regard to the role of MJ in The Amazing Spider-Man 3, we count down 9 potential Mary Jane actresses.

Due to the topic of The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and Mary Jane Watson, this article contains spoilers for The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

“Face it, Tiger, you just hit the jackpot.”

These immortal words of Mary Jane Watson have endured greater than any other line of comic book dialogue this side of “With great power…” A serendipitous creation of Stan Lee’s cornball enthusiasm for capturing the wild and hip baby boomer youth culture of the 1960s and John Romita Sr.’s ability to draw melodrama (and pretty girls) better than any other comic book artist in the business, MJ is arguably the most iconic love interest in the entire superhero form. Others may come, others may go, and others might even meet untimely falls off bridges (or clock towers), but at the end of the day, it appears that it will be Mary Jane Watson standing in Peter Parker’s doorway. She has always been standing in Peter’s doorway.

And after the events of this month’s movie, it’s probably time she saves his life again in The Amazing Spider-Man 3. There is only one hitch: who is Mary Jane?

As everyone and their aunt knows, Shailene Woodley was cast as the once and future love of the wall-crawler’s life, but then her scenes were cut from the finished film of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Now, director Marc Webb has more than hinted that we will probably never see those scenes. This might be partially due to the fact that they will want to rewrite an introduction proper to the famed redhead…and it might be due to the recasting of the role once again, now without Ms. Woodley’s services.

So, who else could play Mary Jane Watson? And can she bring the level of extroverted wild child zeal that has so far escaped previous incarnations of the character on the big screen? Well, we’re here to give our purely speculative guesses on nine actresses who could be the next Mary Jane Watson!

Jane Levy

Jane Levy

When in doubt, always bet on red. And at the moment, one of the most promising and talented actresses in Young Hollywood is an auburn haired beauty that is a near-doppelganger for Mark Bagley’s image of MJ from the Ultimate Spider-Man comic book series. But more importantly, she is ever increasingly proving that she’s a fantastic actress. First making a splash on Suburgatory, ABC’s amusing family show about the hell that is Suburbia, USA, Levy showcases an instant charisma and wit that should come natural to any depiction of comic book Mary Jane’s nonchalant badassery.

Levy has also begun transitioning strongly to features when she, ironically, lived in a Sam Raimi franchise’s shadow and came out with far more fan support and praise than its big budget cousin. As Mia Allen in Evil Dead, Levy played both the hero and the demonically possessed villain for a gruesome, mean-spirited, and wholly groovy reinterpretation of a cult classic that already has its own following that wants to see Levy cross chainsaws with Bruce Campbell. She has since proven she can handle more earnest dramedy by appearing in the inevitable Millennial touchstone, About Alex, due out later this year. A talent on the rise, inescapably the question will become what superhero project will she join, and this one is in need of a charismatic redhead…

Brie Larson

Brie Larson

Brie Larson had a breakout year in 2013. Giving a knockout performance in Short Term 12 and enjoying a scene-stealing role as a 21st Century Silent Bob in Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Don Jon, Larson is another actress that is at this point searching for the right mainstream vehicle. She almost had it when she was the runner-up choice for Sarah Connor in the upcoming Terminator reboot, and she was also rumored to be a contender for Sue Storm in the Fantastic Four remake. However, as an actress, she’s shown incredible range as either a young supervisor of troubled teens or actually playing one in films like The Spectacular Now and (on the other end of the spectrum) 21 Jump Street. Plus, she has fanboy cred for appearing as the villainous Envy in the cult classic Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, whose whole female cast could make up half this list…

Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Perhaps the closest realization to John Romita Sr.’s original vision for Mary Jane, Mary Elizabeth Winstead looks like the character stepped off the page when sporting the long red bangs. But more importantly, Winstead has come into her own in the past few years as an undeniable star on the indie circuit. She worked early in her career with filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino in Death Proof and flirted with franchise films like Live Free or Die Hard, but she truly proved to be a revelation of untapped talent in 2012’s hypnotically wrenching Smashed. Playing a young wife with a drinking problem, it is a multi-layered performance that mixes comedy and tragedy in equal measures. And her newest film Alex of Venice features another absorbing turn in her first fully adult role as a workaholic dealing with divorce.

Of course, some may say that she is too adult now to play a college age character, but at 29, she is still over a year younger than Andrew Garfield. And if rumors about Woodley appearing too young next to the British web-head are true, Winstead could more than compliment Garfield’s still youthful Spidey. This is of course assuming that Garfield sticks around for more than one movie after his contract ends in 2016…

Alison Brie

Alison Brie

Another actress that would likely compliment the wisecracking Garfield well is Alison Brie, aka the comedic secret weapon on Dan Harmon’s eternally underappreciated Community. As an actress who flips back and forth with great ease between playing overeager community college student Annie “Adderall” Edison, and long-seething housewife Trudy Campbell on Mad Men, Brie has a stunning range of talent that is only now being noticed for the big screen treatment in Hollywood. Whether it is as the demonically sweet voice of UniKitty in The Lego Movie or the plainly demonic publicist in Scream 4, Brie leaves an impression in every project she participates in and is only now looking for a star vehicle. However, like Winstead, this scene-stealing comedy ninja might work well with Garfield’s Spidey, but if Sony is looking to recast their Spider-Man in only a few years, she might just miss the red streaks.

Deborah Ann Woll

Deborah Ann Woll

One television star that will definitely be free for a web-slinging spin after this summer is True Blood’s Deborah Ann Woll. As the fiery ginger vampire with a particular sweet tooth for Bible thumping hypocrites on the steamy HBO blood-and-sex soap, Woll has played the perpetual teenager “baby vampire” since the show’s first season and has remained a fan favorite on the series for its entire run.

Created whole cloth by Alan Ball for the TV show (as opposed to its source material by Charlaine Harris), Woll faced some early skepticism but won over even the most ardent book purists with her down to earth appeal and infectiously endearing joy at being a newly minted member of the Undead. She could also bring that same kind of glee to a Peter Parker who will undoubtedly be morose and downtrodden following the ending of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Woll has the right kind of star potential to give this franchise another shot of adrenaline in the arm, and it’s a part that she could really sink her teeth into.

Dianna Agron

Dianna Agron

Still, if Marc Webb and Sony look to pull from a television actress on the potential rise, then they might seek out one they had previously considered. It is well known that not only did Dianna Agron try out for the role of Gwen Stacy in the first Amazing Spider-Man film, but that she was the rumored second choice of the project’s creative pool until they saw Emma Stone test with Andrew Garfield, whose chemistry with her is self-evident for obvious reasons. Nonetheless, Agron came very close to being the one taken for an unpleasant ride by the Green Goblin, and the former Glee star is still looking to transition to film after starring opposite Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer in Luc Besson’s The Family. She’s already courted positive feedback from Sony once to play Gwen. Perhaps she can now land in the franchise’s web as Mary Jane?

Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie

Yet, if Sony is leaning closer toward an up-and-coming “It Girl” who is already breaking out, Margot Robbie more than may fit that bill. Cast as the jaw-dropping trophy wife to Leonardo DiCaprio’s repellant Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street, the 23-year-old Australian actress left one hell of an impression on moviegoers. While the part was relatively small, she sold trashy Brooklyn royalty with an accent as authentic as the movie’s version of Naomi Belfort, a gold digger with serious career objectives.

Working with Martin Scorsese has done much for the starlet, who has gone overnight from roles on ABC’s defunct Pan Am and supporting work in About Time to seemingly being considered for every major blockbuster role in Hollywood. Having contended to appear as both the new Sarah Connor and the new Sue Storm, Robbie finally landed a franchise as Jane Porter in David Yates’ Tarzan. But one swinging love interest can turn into another, and few are more swinging in that groovy 1960s sense than the original comic book Mary Jane Watson.

Anna Kendrick

Anna Kendrick

If there is one young Hollywood actress who appears ready to cross over into superstardom, and has yet to sign onto a major summer blockbuster franchise, it’s everyone’s girl next door, Anna Kendrick. Ms. Kendrick has been knocking it out of the park one movie at a time following her breakout role in Up in the Air, which netted her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Since then, Kendrick has reliably stuck to the work, providing one impressive turn after another. Whether it be as the anxiously disorganized psychiatry rookie in 50/50 or the youthful tagalong caught in an awkward spot in Joe Swanberg’s largely (and impressively) improvised Drinking Buddies, Kendrick has always stood out.

And musical loving audiences discovered exactly that in her star-making role in Pitch Perfect. Playing a musical diva without the success to back up her condescension, it was a curiously unique take on romantic comedy protagonists, which are usually played more as Mary Sues. Thus, it could be imaginable that Kendrick is ready to play Mary Jane after already proving that she can more than bring the firecracker energy needed for the character, as well as the warmth she has displayed in many other movies. Then again, Kendrick already has her own starring franchise with Pitch Perfect 2 in the works for 2015. It may not be the time to sign on as the second love interest in someone else’s sequel.

Shailene Woodley

Shailene Woodley

And yet, at the end of the day, is it possible that this is all a long-winded workaround to Woodley reclaiming the role for a new introduction in 2016? After all, we do not know exactly what her contract is with Sony, but we can guess that it was for more than one picture. Also, it is currently unclear whether Woodley was cut due to rumored chemistry and age difference issues with Garfield, or if the studio spin about not fitting the movie’s narrative flow was the marketing’s honest truth. There is no denying that The Amazing Spider-Man 2certainly had trouble finding a rhythm even in the final cut.

Still, whatever problems led to the deletion of Woodley’s appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it should be remembered that this occurred before a little movie called Divergent opened. Indeed, the YA adaptation proved doubters wrong when it earned a triumphant $54 million in its opening weekend and has grossed $250 million its worldwide cume so far. Given that YA sequels tend to do better than franchise starters, Summit and Lionsgate have definitely doubled down on Woodley’s star appeal by turning the third and final volume of the Divergent literary trilogy by Veronica Roth, Allegiant, into a two-part finale, much like Twilight and The Hunger Games. Further, the buzz on Woodley’s summer romance drama, The Fault in Our Stars, is strong with early screening reactions being nothing short of enthusiastic. Woodley already stands poised to be a movie star. Why sign that away now if she’s under contract?

So there are nine possible names and faces that could be the next Mary Jane. Whoever it is, hopefully she will get the chance to say the famous line. In the meantime, let us know what you think. Who do you want to play Mary Jane and why? Let us know in the comment section below!

Despite the fact she is VERY short at 5'1", I would go with Jane Levy. She is easy on the eyes and has an eerie resemblance to Emma Stone which would further enhance a story line of why Peter Parker would find her interesting. The physicality of the Evil dead film makes me think that she could handle what would be required of a Spider-man film

Jane Levy would be great! Agree with Forthas on the reason for attraction too. Although would like to point out "always bet on red" - she dyes her hair. She is in fact blonde but does look great as a red head.

She may be a little older but I think Isla Fischer would be perfect.

Another good name to throw in is Olivia Thirlby from Dredd.

Deborah Ann Woll please.

Dianna Agron, perfect.

There's no point in downvotes now lol

It should definitely be Samara Weaving (Hugo Weaving's niece). She's an amazing actress and would be a great MJ.

New Power Rangers Movie Announced

Power Rangers are coming back to the big screen courtesy of Lionsgate and Saban. We've got the details...

The Power Rangers are coming back to the movies. Lionsgate have announced that a new live-action Power Rangers feature film is on the way, which sounds like it will be the start of an entirely new franchise.

It's unclear at this point whether the new Power Rangers movie will exist in the same continuity as the numerous TV shows. In fact, some of the language Saban and Lionsgate use make this sound like a reboot of the original Power Rangers TV show, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. See for yourself:

The new film franchise will re-envision the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of high school kids who are infused with unique and cool super powers but must harness and use those powers as a team if they have any hope of saving the world.

“Lionsgate is the perfect home for elevating our Power Rangers brand to the next level,” said Power Rangerscreator Haim Saban. “They have the vision, marketing prowess and incredible track record in launching breakthrough hits from The Hunger Gamesto Twilightand Divergent. In partnership with the Lionsgate team, we’re confident that we will capture the world of the Power Rangers and translate it into a unique and memorable motion picture phenomenon with a legacy all its own.”

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Haim Saban and his team to maximize the potential of this immensely successful and universally recognized franchise,” said Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer. “The Power Rangersstories and characters have been embraced by generations of audiences for more than 20 years, and today they are more powerful than ever. We have the ideal partner and the perfect brand with which to create a motion picture event that will resonate with moviegoers around the world for years to come.”

This isn't the first time the Power Rangers have made it to the big screen. At the height of the initial wave of Power Rangers popularity, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie was released in 1995 to considerable success, while 1997's Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie met with less impressive results. But with a seeming resurgence in kaiju and giant robots at the cinema, such as last year's terrific but underappreciated Pacific Rim and the early positive buzz on Warner Bros.'Godzillareboot, now might be the time for a mega-budget Power Rangers movie. Presumably one that doesn't have to recycle footage from older Japanese TV shows for its big action sequences.

Godzilla Hits the Skids: Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973)

FeatureJim Knipfel5/7/2014 at 9:05AM

Megalon was a giant cockroach with flattened drill bits for hands. That was the least of his troubles. But can Gareth Edwards top it?

Godzilla vs. Megalon can claim credit for any number of things. It’s the only Godzilla film that doesn’t feature a woman in a major role (or any role). It was seen by more people than any other Godzilla film in the series, and in fact helped establish Godzilla’s reputation in the States. Unfortunately it was also the cheapest, the shabbiest, and the worst film in franchise history, which may help explain why Toho has allowed it to become the only Godzilla film to slip into the public domain. And then there’s the whole John Belushi connection.

Ishirô Honda’s 1954 Gojira was a masterpiece, not only in terms of giant monster pictures but Japanese cinema as a whole. At the same time there’s no denying that while many of the 27 sequels were fantastic, exciting, imaginative films, some, well...sucked. There were clear reasons for this. By the time the franchise hit the late ‘60s, the core team so centrally responsible for turning out great films like Destroy All Monsters and Godzilla vs. The Thing began drifting apart to work on other projects, leaving the new Godzilla films in often inexperienced hands.

Although marketing Godzilla’s image had become Toho’s cash cow, the films themselves were never big money makers and took second priority at the studio. Because of this, the budgets shrank over time, with the cuts hitting the special effects department first and hardest. Those monster suits were expensive, you know, and making a new one for every film as had been the case for the first 15 years of the franchise was no longer economically viable. Unfortunately those suits were surprisingly fragile things, and once you start reusing them, well, they tend to fall apart. Those highly-detailed miniature cities don’t exactly come a dime a dozen either, and so why bother with all those stupid expensive details when you’re just gonna crush it anyway? As another money-saving move, directors learned that it was cheaper to simply recycle footage from earlier films (especially the fight scenes) in hopes no one would notice the difference.

What’s more, Godzilla’s audience had changed over the years, so now theaters screening Godzilla films found themselves packed with 8 year-olds and, for some reason, middle-aged women. The studio felt obligated to target the films more directly at this new demographic, so Godzilla became more child-friendly and his features morphed to match, his eyes growing bigger and his snout flattening and becoming more simian. It also meant the pandering introduction of a new central character, an abrasive, squeaky-voiced 8-year-old in a baseball cap and shorts that are maybe just a little too short. Along with Godzilla’s loser cartoon of a son Minya, the kid in the baseball cap would become one of the most loathed characters in franchise history.

Well, okay then, putting all these factors in place brings us to 1973 and Godzilla vs. Megalon, directed by the man more closely associated with Godzilla’s nadir than any other, Jun Fukuda. What the film eventually became can’t entirely be blamed on Fukuda, though. It seems the project didn’t have a prayer from the beginning.

In what was part publicity stunt and part admission they were running out of ideas, Toho held a contest in which they asked school children to design a new character who would star in their next movie. The winning entry came from a young boy who drew a picture of a humanoid robot who bore a striking resemblance to the then-popular Ultraman. A script was produced in which the heroic new robot, Jet Jaguar, would be pitted against a new monster, Megalon, a giant roach with drill-bit hands. Before production got underway though, Toho did some marketing tests and quickly realized Jet Jaguar couldn’t carry an entire picture by himself, and much more importantly, wouldn’t sell enough toys afterward to make it worth anyone’s while.

Okay, so the producers scrambled, deciding to make it a Godzilla film instead, in which Jet Jaguar would play an important but decidedly secondary role. To insure it would be more of a fair fight at film’s end, they dusted off the Gigan suit from the previous Godzilla film to team him up with the big roach. That settled, all they had to do was get a completely revamped script, pull the production together, find a cast, then get it shot and edited. By the time everything else was taken care of, Fukuda had three weeks left in the schedule in which to actually shoot the damn thing.

For efficiency’s sake, a few niceties had to be jettisoned along the way, like miniature buildings. Instead of duking it out in an urban center as per usual, the four monsters would tag team it in some arid rocky wasteland instead. Cheaper that way, and faster, especially if they didn’t have to worry about miniatures and camera tricks and the like. After putting in a call to that annoying kid in the baseball cap and the shorts, they were off and running.

The story goes something like this: Those crazy Seatopians, an advanced civilization of toga-clad interpretive dancers who live on the sea floor near Easter Island, are getting mighty fed up with those surface dwellers and their nuclear tests. When their pleas go unheard, diplomacy fails and the tests roll on, the Seatopians send their giant roach guardian, Megalon, to Japan to make a mess of things, hoping that’ll finally get the point across. Meanwhile an inventor, his boyfriend, and what I guess is their adopted son are having a swell picnic on the shores of a small lake when suddenly a massive earthquake strikes and the lake drains (it’s a pretty cool effect). Back at their house, a couple of shady but incompetent Seatopian agents try to steal Jet Jaguar, the inventor’s new sleek robot.

See, thanks to all that radiation the population of Seatopia is dwindling, so they were hoping to mass produce robots to act as slave labor leaving those remaining Seatopians more time for interpretive dancing. Some kidnapping and slapstick follows. We also learn that Jet Jaguar not only flies, he can change his size at will, too. So when Megalon shows up and starts breaking things and the kid suggests summoning Godzilla to show him what-for, they send the robot (who can also communicate with monsters through an exaggerated sign language) to Monster Island to get him. Some badly faded stock Godzilla footage pads things out for a bit until the inevitable showdown.

Before that, however, Gigan shows up from outer space miraculously enough and he and Megalon shove Jet Jaguar around like a couple of schoolyard bullies. When the tag team match finally does get underway, we learn two things. First, it seems all monsters can communicate via sign language. And second, in a particularly child-pleasing scene we learn Godzilla can slide for great distances while balancing on his tail, feet in the air in front of him, to dropkick his enemies. At film’s end Jet Jaguar (who has an admittedly catchy theme song) walks off into the sunset hinting at a sequel that never arrived.

Yes, well...it’s all pretty sad. It’s poorly lit, badly edited, and the costumes are a little tattered around the edges. The pacing is unpredictable at best and the plot, simple as it might seem, is still a head-scratcher when you get down to specific details. As big a Godzilla fan as I am, even I’m forced to admit that, well, Toho’s not only done better, but has always done better.

As is usually the case it took a few years for the film to reach the States, and when it did, it did so with a big marketing push and a poster that was a send up of the poster for the upcoming overhyped King Kong remake, deceptively featuring Godzilla and Megalon battling atop the World Trade Center. That was only part of what suckered me into the theater the first time. I can’t make any excuses for what suckered me in the next three times, except maybe that it was showing as part of a double bill with Bill Rebane’s Giant Spider Invasion. It didn’t matter that it was a shoddy piece of kaiju eiga, or that it featured no WTC showdown as promised, or that I felt like a big pervert buying my ticket and taking a seat in a theater filled with eight year-olds.

As admittedly bad as it was, I had a real affection for the film, and still do. I never laughed at it (except maybe here, a little). Instead I think I keep returning to it in search of something that would allow me to tell myself it’s not quite as godawful as it really is. I’m still looking. Music’s pretty catchy, so there’s that I guess.

In what was a boon for Toho and bad news for Godzilla, in 1976 while the film was still in theaters the American distributors cut a deal with NBC for a prime-time broadcast hosted by John Belushi. Dressed in a Godzilla costume, Belushi cracked wise throughout the picture a decade and a half before MST3K. Although the film did well in American theaters, it was that broadcast that gave Godzilla his biggest US audience in history, and sent most viewers away convinced from that point onward that all Godzilla films must be just like this one: dumb, cheap, sloppy, kiddie fare with no redeeming qualities. Just a couple of guys in sillyassed rubber suits wrestling clumsily.

It was at that point that Godzilla films became the cultural joke they are today, and being an adult Godzilla geek became the equivalent of being a leper. It’s a bit like judging all of David Lynch’s films after only seeing Dune, or all of Norman Mailer’s work after only reading Tough Guys Don’t Dance. But I guess this is the way we operate.

I don’t know if it can be traced back to that broadcast or not, but since Godzilla vs. Megalon in 1976, even as Toho released over a dozen new Godzilla films and their quality improved dramatically, only two have been released theatrically in the States, which makes it very difficult to change people’s minds.

Joe Carnahan Reveals More About his Daredevil Movie

Joe Carnahan came very close to rebooting Daredevil, and he had a very specific vision for the trilogy.

Joe Carnahan was once the man to direct Daredevil. When Fox was looking to reboot Daredevilafter years of trying to figure out what to do after the Ben Affleck film, Joe Carnahan came in and pitched a slightly different take on things, one which would have certainly distinguished itself from the parade of other superhero movies out there.

Mr. Carnahan envisioned Daredevilas a more low-budget, violent film set in the golden-age of martial arts and revenge movies: the 1970s. He even created a sizzle reel outlining his proposed aesthetic for the film. It's fantastic. Watch it here, and then read the biggest revelation of all about his Daredevilreboot!

In an interview with Movie Pilot, Mr. Carnahan reveals even more of his plans for Daredevil, including the fact that it was an intended trilogy.

What people don’t realize about the DD project is that the producers of the film, got to me very late. They had a script that I read and I thought that while the action was wonderful, the story didn’t really have any additional bite. There was nothing. I suggested a trilogy as follows. ‘Daredevil ‘73’ ‘Daredevil ‘79’ and ‘Daredevil ‘85’ where I was going to do a kind of ‘cultural libretto’ and make the music of those eras a kind of thematic arc. So the first one would be Classic Rock, the second one would be Punk Rock and the third film would be ‘New Wave.’ The problem was, the option was almost set to lapse so we made an eleventh hour bid to Marvel to retain the rights for a bit longer so I could rework the script. Unfortunately, it just didn’t happen. Marvel wanted the rights back. I don’t blame them.

We kind of hope he gets another shot at the character. His recent TV work on episodes of The Blacklist have proven that he can translate the big action movie aesthetic well to the small screen, so perhaps Marvel will give him a call for a couple of episodes their upcoming Daredevilseries that will run on Netflix.

The entire Joe Carnahan interview can be read at Movie Pilot. It's great. Go read it.

Check out the latest trailer for Seth MacFarlane's Western comedy, A Million Ways to Die in the West...

The Old West was a dangerous, dangerous place. Heartless outlaws, weary Natives, and an unforgiving countryside. Thus, it’s also rife for raunchy comedy gold, as Seth MacFarlane steps into the director’s chair for his second feature film, following 2012’s Ted, with A Million Ways to Die in the West. You can watch the newest NSFW red band trailer about the baddest (taste) outlaw this side of Sheriff Bart right below.

In this newest film, MacFarlane drops the Teddy Bear CGI to also star in the picture as a cowardly sheep farmer named Albert. After he backs out of a gunfight with the toughest hombre in the territory (Liam Neeson), his golddigging girlfriend (Amanda Seyfried) leaves him for a real lady killer (Neil Patrick Harris). Fortunately, a mysterious beauty who’s quick with a gun (Charlize Theron) shows up just in time to teach him the true way of the West as he seeks his revenge.

…Plus a lot of people die. Like, A LOT.

A Million Ways to Die in the West opens May 30, 2014.

Eugenie Bondurant has been cast in the part of Tigris for next year's The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2.

Following yesterday’s casting of Michelle Forbes, it appears that The Hunger Games: Moockingjay – Part 2 is still ready to add more as Eugenie Bondurant has been cast in the role of Tigris in the upcoming YA adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ best-selling trilogy (or now quadrilogy) closer.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 adapts the first half of Suzanne Collins' book and boasts the cast of Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Jeffrey Wright, Natalie Dormer, Julianne Moore, Stanley Stucci and Donald Sutherland.

In the future Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) must fight for her impoverished District 12 in a dystopian North American regime called “Panem.” After several Hunger Games, contests to the death between children, go awry, Katniss finds herself participating in a massive rebellion against the authoritarian government.

Directed by The Hunger Games: Catching Fire helmer Francis Lawrence, both Mockingjay films are being shot concurrently and are scheduled for a Thanksgiving release in November 2014 and 2015, respectively.

Godzilla: Awakening review

ReviewDon Kaye5/7/2014 at 1:42PM

With less than two weeks to go before Godzilla stomps into theaters, this graphic novels brushes up on the big green guy’s history.

Legendary Pictures’ publishing arm, Legendary Comics, has released an 80-page graphic novel this week titled Godzilla: Awakening, which acts as a print prequel to the new Godzilla movie that arrives on May 16. The book is co-written by Max Borenstein – the credited screenwriter on the movie – and Greg Borenstein, and delves further into events that took place largely in the 1940s, paving the way for the emergence of Godzilla into the modern world.

I’m hesitant to get too deeply into details of the story for anyone who wants to go into the movie cold, because the book does get into the history of Gojira -- as he is referenced here -- his origins and purpose, and his relationship to the other creatures, known as MUTOs, that also appear in the film and have a long history as well. I don’t think that reading the book beforehand necessarily spoils anything for you – it may in fact give you a leg up while watching the film in case any details or exposition fly by on a first viewing (that’s par for the course with any movie, not Godzilla in particular). For me, having seen the movie before reading the book, it enhanced certain plot details while providing back story for not just the monsters but one of the film’s major characters. But you still might want to watch the film first, which is an appropriate choice as well.

What’s also interesting is that the structure and art in the book actually mirror the structure and visual esthetic of the movie in a subtle way. Godzilla is only fleetingly glimpsed in this story (although you do see much more of him in the movie, don’t worry) and many of the panels that feature Godzilla or another monster are drawn from very specific points of view that only help in creating the impression of sheer, incredible size and power. Godzilla: Awakening goes for and often achieves a cinematic feel to match its bigger celluloid incarnation.

Kudos to illustrators Eric Battle (X-Men, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman), Yvel Guichet (Pacific Rim: Tales from Year Zero, Superboy Annual), Alan Quah (RageThe Vampire Diaries) and Lee Loughridge (Batman Adventures, Arkham Asylum: Living Hell) for an often luscious palette of colors and evocative images that certainly complement the movie while providing just a slightly different look for the monsters. The cover art by Arthur Adams (Godzilla, Fantastic Four, Uncanny X-Men) is quite striking as well. As I hinted above, Godzilla: Awakening can either serve as a nice appetizer for the epic main course hitting theaters a week and a half from now, or a pleasing side dish once you’ve sat down for the meal – and probably returned for seconds, as I intend to do.

Godzilla: Awakening is available at comic book retailers now.

Insidious: Chapter 3

Leigh Whannell signs on to direct Insidious: Chapter 3 after writing and co-starring in the last two installments.

Focus Features, Entertainment One (eOne), Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, and Blumhouse Productions announced today that Leigh Whannell will direct and write the third chapter of the Insidious franchise, Insidious: Chapter 3.

The news comes as a boon for Whannell who has carefully turned the Insidious franchise, with its unique combination of haunted house thrills and melodramatic quirks, into a personal project after he and director James Wan had seen their previous horror creation, the original 2004 film Saw, morph into a different type of series. Whannell wrote both previous installments in the Insidious series and appears in the supporting role of “ghostbuster” Specs in the movie.

Focus Features, which acquired the rights to release Insidious: Chapter 3 from FilmDistrict, plans to bring the film to U.S. theaters on April 3, 2015. eOne will distribute the picture in Canada, U.K. and Spain. Sony will distribute the picture in the rest of the world. Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions, which produced both Insidious and Insidious: Chapter 2, is producing the next installment along with Oren Peli and James Wan.

“It’s with great pleasure that we turn the Insidious franchise over to the co-creator Leigh Whannell,” said Focus Features CEO Peter Schlessel. We are all excited to see in what direction Leigh takes the next installment and we are also glad to welcome James Wan to his new role as producer.

Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse said, “We are all excited to bring a third film to audiences and know James and Leigh have great things in store for our fans.”

We talked with Leigh Whannell at length about what Insidious 3 could be about when we interviewed him last year, and his answers did intrigue us. He had his eye on making a third movie, and it is now coming to fruition after the last film grossed $161 million worldwide. Wan meanwhile has moved on to the Fast and Furious franchise and is directing Fast & Furious 7 for an April 2015 release.

Marc Webb Wants Kraven The Hunter in The Amazing Spider-Man 3

NewsDavid Crow5/7/2014 at 6:49PM

Director Marc Webb reveals that for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, he is very interested in Kraven the Hunter.

The ending of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has left every web-loving true believer to ponder what the future of the wall-crawler will mean. We know that Marc Webb and Andrew Garfield will be back for potentially their last in the series (definitely Webb’s) with The Amazing Spider-Man 3. And with Sony’s slate still including Sinister Six and Venom spin-offs on the horizon, we too look at what the line-up can mean for the next movie, as well as who might play Mary Jane Watson in it. However, director Marc Webb obviously has his own ideas about where the web-slinger might be headed.

While speaking to Comicbook.com, Webb let spill that he is very, very interested in the character Kraven the Hunter. Sure, he names plenty of others who will be needed to fill out a Sinister Six line-up, including Vulture and Doc Ock, but it turns out that it’s old Sergei Kravinoff that catches the helmer’s eye first.

“Kraven,” Webb replied when asked about which villains interest him. “Kraven, I like the idea of Kraven. The Vulture, Doc Ock, I always thought the idea of Mysterio was interesting. Maybe Scorpion. But really, Kraven, I think is kind of interesting.”

Sergi Kravinoff had his first appearance in August 1964’s The Amazing Spider-Man #15 and was one of the founding members of the Sinister Six in The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1. Originally the half-brother of Chameleon who was out for revenge on the web-slinger, as well as to prove that he was capable of hunting the greatest prey of all, man(-spider), he has always been portrayed as a game hunter wearing lion and cheetah furs.

However, Kraven really became one of the all-time great Spider-Man villains when J.M. DeMatteis discovered his obscure Russian history and crafted the iconic Spidey story “Kraven’s Last Hunt” around it in 1987. The story, which depicted Kraven as the last member of a Russian aristocracy that ended when his parents’ patron Tsar Nicholas II was murdered in the February Revolution, reimagines Kraven as a blue blood tragedy that had become obsessed with finding redemption by bathing in Spider-Man’s crimson red.

He has appeared in many stories since.

The Amazing Spider-Man 3 is due in June 2016.

Javier Bardem for Kraven please. He has the gravitas that is fitting for the role.

Chris Hemsworth linked with Lethal Weapon reboot

Warner Bros is looking to reboot Lethal Weapon, with Chris Hemsworth reportedly offered a lead role.

Once upon a time, plans were afoot for a Lethal Weapon 5, which would have reunited Mel Gibson, Danny Glover and director Richard Donner for one last outing. However, the collapse of Mel Gibson's career, for well-known reasons, extinguished any chance of that happening.

So, in Hollywood, if you can't make any more sequels, what do you do instead? Yep, you reboot the franchise. The Tracking Board is reporting that Warner Bros is developing a reboot of LethalWeapon that would, inevitably, recast the film. Working under the project name Lionhunters, the plot apparently focuses on the son of one of the characters who wants to join the police force. Whether that leaves room for a handover from old characters to new is one of many issues that would need to be addressed.

Justin Lin (who directed four Fast & Furious movies) is attached as possible director, and Will Beall is working on the script. It's unclear whether Shane Black has had any involvement thus far.

So let's end this throroughly, er, cheery story with a casting rumour: Chris Hemsworth has been offered one of the starring roles. That doesn't mean he's taken it, but he appears to be on the producers' radar.

More as we hear it. Feel free to add a comment about how we're all getting too old for this shit in the comments.

I rather just see the Shane Black written fifth film made a reality than a PG-13 sequel/reboot directed by the guy that gave us Vin Diesel flying from one bridge to another whilst catching someone in the air.

Like this needs to be rebooted. Why not just give it a different name. Why reboot the classics?

Money. Reboots have an in-built brand awareness from fans familiar with the franchise already. This makes a studio consider often reboots less of a risk than original pictures.

Reboot? Why not just do another one with Gibson and Glover? Not everybody hates Gibson just because the West Coast wants us to.

Guardians Of The Galaxy has "franchise potential", new pics

Disney's boss offers hints of a Guardians Of The Galaxy 2, as Marvel releases new pictures from the film...

As things stand, Marvel's phase three of movies in its cinematic universe is set to feature Captain America 3, Thor 3, Ant-Man, The Avengers 3 and more than likely Doctor Strange. Unless Marvel is looking to slot a sixth film into this particular phase, that's your lot until 2018.

One name missing from that slate is a possible Guardians Of The Galaxy 2. The first film, directed by James Gunn, is due out on August 1st, and is arguably the toughest sell Marvel has to date. That said, the trailer certainly helped. However, as things stand, there's no space in Marvel's calendar for a sequel until at least 2018 - which would be four years after the first movie came out.

But is Marvel planning a sequel anyway, or is this more of a standalone? Well, according to Disney CEO Bob Iger, Guardians Of The Galaxy is a film "we believe... has strong franchise potential". Those are not the words of a man who has ruled out Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 at all.

Talking further about the film, Iger said that it's "a whole other Marvel realm or universe in terms of where it takes place, the characters that populate it and the stories that you can tell for those characters. So, I think, I'm not going to predict that we've got another Avengers on our hands, but that's certainly the goal".

One last thing on Guardians Of The Galaxy while we're here: Marvel has released a pair of new stills from the film, featuring Chris Pratt. You can see those below.

Guardians Of The Galaxy arrives in cinemas on August 1st 2014.

Any reason why his "Eye-lights" are down closer to the level of his nose? The faux-brows are about eye level...

OF COURSE it has "franchise potential". Aside from the Thanos & infinity Stone connections to the other Marvel-verse flicks, Im betting that this movie is gonna surprise a LOT of folks who have no clue who these characters are in a VERY good way. As Iger said--you could tell a whole range of stories with these characters and the supporting cast of baddies , AND--though its set far across the Galaxy, they COULD end up on Earth at times, and interact with the better known Avengers, as has happened in the comics.

If GotG is as funny and entertaining as I think it will be, it's going to be a smash, and very possibly THE blockbuster film of the summer.

agreed--I think it has the potential to catch folks off guard & blow them away in the same way the original Star Wars did

Well, I don't know about that. I do think that Rocket Raccoon could be a huge merchandising opportunity if they pull it off. I just hope the script is tight and the film is funny and exciting. If it's good then it will do really well.

while I admit its a stretch of a comparison, the way I mean it is the fact that nobody knew anything about Star Wars & even FOX expected it to be a tax write off. While Marvel certainly expects this to succeed, it has the same unknown by most quality to it & it is looking like it has that fun space saga vibe that SW did--at least to me. I love Pratt on Parks & Rec & he seems to be playing StarLord with a Han Solo-like cockyness & the whole team seems cast very well to me, as a fan of the comic for a number of years

Warner Bros pressing ahead with new Flintstones movie

The Flintstones are heading back to the big screen - with some help from Will Ferrell and Adam McKay...

It would be fair to say that we were not fans of either The Flintstones, or The Flintstones: Viva Rock Vegas, a pair of live action movies that landed back in the 1990s. The first in particular remains a staggeringly bad way to bring a classic animated series to the big screen. Brilliantly cast yet terribly executed, The Flintstones is a tremendously poor blockbuster movie.

However, plans are afoot to bring The Flintstones back to the big screen, and this time, they might actually get the film they deserve. The plan this time is for an animated movie, and it's been overseen by Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, and Chris Henchy. Ferrell and McKay and executive producers, and Henchy is penning the screenplay for the ne tilm.

It's in early development so far, but is the latest evidence of Warner Bros' growing commitment to feature animation. It recently added two thus-far unnamed animated movies to its schedule.

More on The Flintstones as we hear it. Heck, if it does well, we might get another Jetsons film too...
