The Amazing Spider-Man 2 swung $8.7 million from Thursday night screenings, behind Captain America 2.
The web-slinger has started his newest box office swing Thursday night with $8.7 million.
As announced by Sony Pictures, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 played late Thursday night and into midnight shows for a number projected as just shy of $9 million. Deadline has reported that this was less than industry tracking had previously projected, but the wall-crawler should be in line to earn $85 to $90 million over the three-day weekend, depending upon family turnout during Saturday and Sunday matinees.
This number while respectable on its own, and ahead of 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man weekend debut of $62 million, should still likely be taken with trepidation at Sony. That total is well below all three box office weekend debuts of the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy, including Spider-Man 2, which opened on a Wednesday, and none of the three enjoyed 3D surcharges. Further, it only surpassed the numbers of the 2012 reboot, because The Amazing Spider-Man opened on a Tuesday. Comparably, the newest web-spinning opus will likely open less than Marvel Studios and Disney’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which bowed with $95 million. It might appear that two years and two films later, audiences have yet to fully warm to Sony’s reboot of the franchise.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is in theaters now.
