The 22 Jump Street star has some ideas about how a Gambit solo movie should work.
You will see Channing Tatum as Gambit in an upcoming X-Men movie, there's no doubt about that. As for when that might actually happen, well...that's a bit more nebulous. While promoting 22 Jump Street, Mr. Tatum spoke with MTV News about the challenges of stepping into his first superhero movie, how things are progressing, and what he'd like to see with the character when it happens.
"Creatively we're starting to chug forward," he said. "Obviously, there's nothing written, there's only conversations and dreams, really, right now."
Interestingly enough, it sounds like they intend to introduce Gambit in a solo film first, rather than in a larger X-Men movie. In other words, don't expect to see Gambit in X-Men: Apocalypse. When asked point blank by MTV about a possible appearance in that film, he replied:
"No, we've talked about it being a standalone first and actually trying to change the superhero movie just a little. Gambit isn't really your typical hero. He's a thief. He walks on the grey. I'm hoping we can try and change it a little bit and then ultimately feather into the other ones."
That's actually rather refreshing to hear. There's no reason that a Gambit solo movie would need a nine figure budget, and without all of the baggage that comes along with a larger X-Men film (or even one starring Wolverine), 20th Century Fox could break the mold a little bit.
It might still take awhile, though. Mr. Tatum likened the experience of making a Marvel movie to "climbing a mountain."
