There's an animation/live-action hybrid Sonic the Hedgehog movie in the works. We've got the details.
What took them so long? Sonic the Hedgehog, veteran of countless video games, an animated series (with another on the way), and a long-running comic book series from Archie Comics is finally coming to the big screen. Neal Moritz, who has an impressive genre film record that includes, appropriately enough, many of the Fast & Furious films, will produce the Sonic the Hedgehog movie for Sony.
Sony will work with Marza Animation Planet to make Sonic the Hedgehog as a CG/live-action hybrid. The screenplay comes from Evan Susser and Van Robichaux of the Upright Citizens Brigade.
"There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog and a built-in international fan base," Columbia Pictures president of production Hannah Minghella said. "Along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we're looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before."
Marza's CEO, Masano Maeda promised they would "bring a fresh take to Sonic, while still capturing everything that the fans love about him."
Now, let's set aside for a moment the usual concerns that video game movies are, frankly, quite often not any good at all. Sonic is a character who is versatile enough to work in any number of situations, and has a universal, dare we say it, Disney-esque appeal that many video game protagonists lack. Then again, one could say the same thing about Mario and look at how that all turned out.
