Universal Pictures moves the fifth Bourne movie to summer 2016 but slates Straight Outta Compton for August 2015.
Universal Pictures is shuffling its deck, and it is doing so with a bullet.
The first revelation is that Universal has moved its upcoming fifth Jason Bourne film, which is currently untitled, from August 2015 to July 15, 2016. Set to return to the adventures of Alex Cross (Jeremy Renner) after 2012’s The Bourne Legacy, this fifth spy thriller is also being directed by Justin Lin, the man who resurrected Universal’s Fast and Furious franchise into global phenomenon glory, starting with Tokyo Drift and culminating in Fast and Furious 6. Frank Marshall is also still on board to produce the sequel.
But Universal is not abandoning that plum August 14, 2015 release date. On the contrary, they are placing Straight Outta Compton on that spot—a biopic that will follow the swift rise and fall of N.W.A. into pop culture immortality. In fact, we recently talked to Ice Cube about that movie and his own memories of N.W.A. during a 22 Jump Street interview several weeks ago.
Directed by F. Gary Gray (Friday, The Italian Job), Straight Outta Compton stars O’Shea Jackson Jr. as Ice Cube, Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre, and Jason Mitchell as Eazy-E.
