The giant robot vs. giant monster slugfest may have stalled at the U.S. box-office, but it's doing very well overseas. Does this mean Warner Bros. will take a chance on Pacific Rim 2?

We've made no secret of our love for Pacific Rim over here. Unfortunately, the greatest giant monster movie we've ever seen (and the most interesting blockbuster-type film of the year) was knocked around at the box-office by (shudder) Grown-Ups 2. However, the reports that Pacific Rim just opened at #1 in China to the tune of $45 million, might change some perceptions. Pacific Rim's Chinese opening eclipses that of box-office juggernauts like The Dark Knight Rises and the Harry Potter

And that's not all. Pacific Rim has been doing strong international business despite underperforming in the United States...and it still hasn't even opened in Japan. Is Pacific Rim 2 now a possibility? Deadline recently reported that director, Guillermo del Toro was talking sequel with screenwriter, Travis Beecham. "We've been talking about the idea for it and working on a pitch," said del Toro.

If you actually went and saw Pacific Rim (and we hope you did), you were treated to a fully-realized fantasy world that certainly could be expanded. On the other hand, the film didn't go out of its way to leave a door open for a sequel, and could stand quite well on its own. However, there's would be a certain justice in this underperforming film reaching the audience it deserves and getting another chance. We'll be keeping a close eye on this one. See? There is justice in the world...just not in the United States, apparently.
